Ken Block spent the past couple of decades entertaining us, but now the racer and automotive enthusiast has left us far too soon.

Ken Block is a legendary name among automotive enthusiasts, many of whom have grown up watching the creator of Hoonigan Industries race on various types of surfaces, pull off mesmerizing stunts in his wildly popular Gymkhana series, and oversee some of the coolest builds on the planet – many of them either Ford-related or based upon the Mustang itself. Sadly, however, Block passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, January 2, 2023 after a snowmobile crash at the age of 55.

The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office released a statement noting that around 2pm, emergency services received a call regarding a snowmobile accident that occurred in the Mill Hollow area near Provo, Utah in the Uinta National Forest. The sheriff’s department, along with Utah State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service, responded to the call, but sadly, it was too late. Ken Block was reportedly riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when it upended, landing on top of him. He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.

Block became a true star in the automotive world decades ago, building upon his interests in the world of skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. In the racing world, he got his start in 2005 at Rally America, where he quickly found success and was named rookie of the year before entering the very first X Games rally driving event one year later. Block’s career really began to take off in 2007, however, when he joined the ranks of the World Rally Championship (WRC).

The first American driver in WRC, Block founded the Monster World Rally Team in 2010, which was later renamed Hoonigan Racing Division, competing in the Global Rallycross Championship FIA World Rallycross as well. However, it was Hoonigan Industries and the Gymkhana series depicting mesmerizing acts of stunt driving that truly catapulted him to fame, cementing his spot in the minds of enthusiasts across the globe.

Sadly, Block leaves behind not only a massive legacy, but also his wife, Lucy, and three children – Lia, who has made several appearances in videos alongside her father in recent months. However, the indelible mark he left on those of us that have grown up watching him compete and entertain with his unmatched skills behind the wheel will certainly never be forgotten.
