replaced stock 6x8s with polk 5x7s

finally got around to doing it. got the polk 5x7s for x-mas and had to wait for warmer weather and overcome laziness to do it.

man, what a night and day difference. sound is much more rounded and cleaner. spatial acoustics quality is really noticeable.

i'm sad that i waited this long to get around to doing it.

job was easy. all it requires is small flat head screw driver, T10 torx and 7mm hex. took about 20 minutes for both door speakers.

i didn't put use a metra 72-5600 wiring harness. i just cut and spliced. also the orange and white wire is the negative, just an FYI.

I love Polk!! What speakers did you replace? I have the Shaker 500 in mine. I had Polk's in my S-10. They sounded amazing!!

Sweet, it's going on my list!

Hang on. I have such a bad memory, I can only notice night & day differences. Did you see that much change? Thanks!

Did you leave the sub woofers in the door alone? Since you didn't mention it I'm assuming you did... If so I wouldn't go through the hassle of pulling off the door panels and only replace the full range speakers. But as you mentioned, it really wasn't a big deal. I would love to be able to decide on which speaker upgrades (model & brand) will be. Only issue is whether or not I decide on a convertible or not, and I'm not sure of the size of the rear speakers in the 'vert rear door panels as opposed to the coupe's rear deck. Would be great if they were the same but I seriously doubt it...

I should have the speaker upgrades waiting when I drive it off the lot. Only problem is figuring out what 'it' will eventually be... I like how others have a pile of parts and upgrades ready and waiting for cars they have on order. Need to finish saving up my down payment before I start serious shopping.

The stock full range speakers leave a lot to be desired as far as sound quality and brightness goes. This is a VERY worthwhile upgrade to the stock sound system. The standard "subs" in the lower part of the doors are adequate enough for most. I was personally not happy with how the 5x7's sounded. I am using Boston Acoustics speakers and am very happy. I used to use Pioneer speakers in my Focus and was real happy with those as well.

To answer your question, whether you have a coupe or convertible, all 4 of your full range speakers are 5x7

I kept the stock subwoofers. I was going for clarity in the mid and upper range, which I got in droves. The stock speakers were way too muddy. Not surprising there.

There's enough overlap between the stock subs and the polks to avoid any noticeable gap in sound between the two.

The Polk were good enough so that I could turn up the sound to as high as I could take it without distortion. Not surprisingly the weak link now is the head unit. I'm glad I'm not a true audiophile otherwise I'd be blowing all my money on audio upgrades instead of more money on performance.

Next on my list is window tinting and CAI and tune. Not necessarily in that order. I've already got GT500 mufflers on the car.

You just did the fronts? Change the rears as well, they make a difference.

If you can do the fronts, you can do the rears as well.

How much did they run you if you don't mind me asking? Also where did you order them from?

Is it best to replace all 5x7's with the same speakers? I just bought 2 pairs of JBl GTO8628's and have yet to replace the rear speakers.

They were on clearance for $35 per pair when I bought mine from BB a couple weeks ago . . . I got the last two pairs my store had and called two others in the area but they were already out.
