2005 Mustang Speedometer Failure

Well I bought the car new and have loved it but the little things over time have drove me nuts. While under warranty they replaced the gas tank, radio twice, and a few other little things.

Now the warranty is of course long gone and today either I was having fun on the Salt Flats or my new mustang can go about 190 MPH on our regular highway. Yes, sarcasm. I'm driving to work and the needle just gradually started heading clockwise until it went a little past straight down.

I took it into Rob Sight Ford and they said it needs an entire Instrument Cluster, full install is $668. Oh, and about a 4 month backorder.

So has anyone experienced this and had any other options?

Does the price sound about right?

I've had some bad experiences with 'Dealerships' before so figured I'd check. ALL the other items on the cluster are working fine. The mileage on the odometer are consistent with the mile markers on the highway.

My plan is to use the GPS for a speed gauge for a few months until I can squirrel away enough money unless some other stanger has some miracle cure.

Contact Mike at Toulsey Ford in Minn. he can hook you up with a new cluster. Just give him your VIN and Milage and he'll take of the rest when you order it. He'll get it shipped to you right quick. Oh yeah,it only cost me about $285.

FYI: I installed myself within 15 minutes of receipt. No issues whatsoever...and this was several thousand miles back.

Cheers!!!

I had issues with the temp gauge on my previous 05. There's a guy on eBay - I think he's still there- where you pull out your gauge cluster and send it to him and he fixes it. Costs somewhere between $150 and 200 I think.
Worst case scenario, buy a new cluster yourself, and either put it in yourself or get a regular mechanic to do it. Stay away from the Stealership- mine wanted about$800 to replace my gauge cluster.

When my cluster went bad I got a GT500 from Tousley , it was the same price as the GT cluster. If you get a cluster that has all the options turned on for you car correctly , then you can install it your self with no problems. My car is an 05 which doesn't have the TPMS and since the GT500 clusters are for 07 and newer they have the TPMS turned on , so I got a warning each time I started the car and had to take it to the dealer. They charged me 1 hour labor to set the cluster info ...

when cluster fails, does odometer still work? Also, is there mileage issues when changing a cluster, or is it stored elsewhere? just wondering if theres a affidavit required or something to keep 'odometer discrepency' off the title... cool to know that a gt500 can go in a gt

Same thing happened to my wifes. There is a guy on eBay who puts all new controllers in your cluster and calibrates it for $99.

Did an outstanding job and turnover was fast.

Just search ebay for Mustang cluster repair.

I know this is sorta bringing this thread back from the dead, but if you don't want to replace the whole cluster, you can replace just the small stepper motor itself that moves the needle. My tach went bad and now it's working perfectly again after just replacing the motor. They can be bought on eBay for about 5 dollars each and the replacement only takes less than an hour. I'm a total novice at soldering and I was able to unsolder the old motor and replace it with the new one in no time. Appearantly lots of people have problems with these motors. Hope this helps... I can provide more details on the replacement process if you need.

My speedo failed last night; just sits on zero - everything else works. Car only has 14k miles too. Search Engine revealed speedo repair shops all over the U.S. that will repair - remanufacture the cluster. Prices are all over the place as are the warranties. The most expensive I've found will send you a shipping carton but you are paying dearly for the convenience.

I found a shop within driving distance one state over and sent an inquiry asking if I could just drive the car over early one day, deliver the cluster and wait on it. Awaiting an answer.

The leatherette on the doors is peeling off and the headliner is drooping too. I know a car upholstery shop in the same state as the speedo repair shop; both with reasonable prices.

Go with the eBay repair service. Backed by warranty and reasonable.
