That's cool. I got my start the same way in the town a grew up in @ 15 was an aux. then @ 17 became on call but had to wait until 18 to get into buildings. I then got my EMT-I and joined the town ambulance and when I was in my early twenties started making the move to career. I got onto the Fort Devens Fire dept has a civilian federal FF and stayed there for just over 3yrs. I then wanted to make the move on a more busy dept and took the test for 3 depts and placed 2nd on the list for southbridge. It is an old mill town, heavy with 3 deckers and mix levels of income. good amount of work averaged about 2,500 or so runs a year would get 2 or more good workers and bunch of small one room stuff. Town has about 19,000 but there is more for sure. We run 3 engines, have 2 ladders but will run 1 , rescue and 3 ambulances + supporting trucks. I was union president for 6yrs, that was fun, also was on union contract committee for most of my time.

Yeah you guys are what I typical think of with the NE departments. This area is a far cry different from what you see. We are small and spread out as are most southern pure volunteer departments. Ive been in it since 05, got FF1, working on emt-b, have hazmat a&o, extrication, clandestine labs and a few other certs. I feel ive done pretty good for maintaining full time jobs as well. Our run numbers are only about 150 a year but we also have a pop less than 1600.

Keep with it. Naturally I had to go to the academy. The Fed job gives credit for years of volley time but I went to texas for crash school ( we had moore army air field) we had 2month rotation to the crash station at the air field or the vaction house as we called . Soutbridge I had to go to academy no graduate no job. We are haz mat operational, but I went to confined space, swift water rescue, repelling/high angle ,advanced extrication, R.I.T , certified fire instructor, to name a few. We have a dive team and I did support, there are guys on the state hazmat team but we all pretty much did advanced training. I never did get my medic but the ambulance is medic and we have a hospital in town. new guys get the meat wagon but the floor guys ( by rotation) take the 2nd rig if another call comes in while they are out 3rd is back up

I have met some guys from Montgomery a couple times at conventions, nice group of guys. great chatting with you

Yeah all my certs and most classes I took were through the AL fire college so they will carry over. I'll always be at least a volunteer, but I dont know if i'll go career just because its a pay cut.

Pay cut My wife is an ICU nurse now but even when she finished her 2nd year of nursing she made more than me after 10yrs in the fire service . she pays for most of my mods .

although I'm out now so she pays for even more now .

Yeah I get the "you don't need that" too but I also get the "son of a *****, you bought what!" more often than not.
