It was designed to allow citizens to protect themselves from an oppressive government. The founding fathers had just freed themselves from tyranny and wanted to ensure that the government they were putting together wouldn't end up the same or worse.
Does anyone here think that the US Government would allow citizens to have sufficient arms to build an army that could even get in the way if there was a dispute as to individual freedoms?
