Its a flying insect that looks like a wasp, except they're black. That's one in my picture above. They build nests out of mud and it dries into hard dirt, usually high up on flat walls and in corners. They look like this....







They probably call them something different in Canada.

 

I've never seen a nest like that, but I know we used to have some big wasps that burrowed in the mud down by our pond.

 

They are actually pretty amazing. The female will build each one of those pipes using God knows how many little ***** of mud about the size of a BB and shape them into those tubes. You'll see them flying around carrying them. They'll build one amazingly fast. The ones I tore down weren't there a few days ago and there were 3 separate ones with 3 tubes each already. A couple of them were still wet where the mud hadn't dried yet. They'll lay their larvae in there and pack them full of spiders for them to feed on.

 

That is crazy.

Here in the Cascades, I have a few small ones in my shed each summer.

Nothing like these. Think of how much wasp spit that takes! lol
