I saw a few of fresh dirt dobber nests up in the corner of the car port today so I got a putty scraper to tear them down. Got up there and scraped them off, and they broke apart when they hit the concrete. They were already stuffed full of spiders, I don't know how they packed them all in there, and they all were about the same size.
Not to mention they weren't dried out and dead, they were still soft and would move a little when you poked them. I read that they sting them and the venom doesn't kill them, but just paralyzes and preserves them for their offspring to eat.

Then I walked out on the porch today and apparently its so damned hot that the cicadas are just dropping dead out of the air.

Do they have dirt dobbers up north are is that just a southern species?

Apparently they will sting you like a wasp, but you must have to actually mash one or try to catch it or something because I don't know a single person that has ever been stung by one. I didn't even know they could sting you until I started reading about the spiders they catch.

Wow I never knew they caught spiders.
We had plenty of dobbers around growing up. Never got stung but never provoked them

I actually got a pic of one dragging a spider off that it had caught out here a while back. I watched him for a bit, he was dragging it backwards, straight up a vertical garage door. Pretty impressive.
