Even though talk of a new Cobra Jet coincides with the all-new 2015 Mustang, the lack of confirmation for the dragster's platform leaves Hot Rod to guess that the car might switch to another platform – specifically a front-drive-based, unibody car like the Fusion or Taurus.
I'm gonna say . . . notgonnahappen.com on a new Cobra-Jet not based on the Mustang . . . .

Cool

I do not see why Ford would not produce a 2015 Mustang Cobra jet . They currently replace the rear end with a 9 inch . They could still do the same with the IRS rear end in the next gen Mustang. I am surprised Hot Rod would not realize the 2015 Mustang would probably make for a better Cobra jet than the current Mustang.

There's no way in hell they're making a non-Mustang Cobra Jet. They don't even have any other rear-wheel-drive platforms. I guess they would be able to modify one for use as a drag car, but no one would buy it.

I do wonder if they'll keep 2015's IRS. I'm betting they won't if they like winning drag races.

(Also we have this story on the front page /shamelessplug)

They might if there is some value in doing so such as a demonstration of how tough the factory rear might be. GM was pretty proud of saying the ZL1 survived hundreds of passes on the stock IRS without failure.

I'd actually like to see this.
Man, I'd trust that IRS system so much if it could handle that much torque and strain over and over.

Talking

If GM would have had faith in the IRS, they would not have put a 9 inch Ford in the drag only COPO Camaros.
