POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — Oregon Tech swept the three major individual awards for the NAIA Division II men’s national basketball tournament after the Hustlin’ Owls thumped top-rated Northwood of Florida, 63-46, Tuesday night at the Keeter Gymnasium at the College of the Ozarks.
In winning Tech’s third national title, Danny Miles was named national Coach of the Year. He also won the award in 2004 and 2008, when the Hustlin’ Owls won their other national championships.
Senior Kyle Gomez won the Mr. Hustle Award.
Bobby Hunter became the first freshman to win tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Hunter took game scoring honors in the championship game with 20 points, and finished his five games with 106 points.
The only award OIT did not win was the James Naismith Sportsmanship Award, and that went to Cardinal Stritch of Wisconsin, which was eliminated in the tournament quarterfinals by Davenport of Michigan.
The Hustlin’ Owls also leave with 32 tournament victories, three better than Northwestern of Iowa on the all-time list.
