6 Things We Know About the 2018 GT350 Mustang
by Brian Dally

Every modern Mustang has performance Carol Shelby would have killed for in the 1960s, even the EcoBoost. For 2017 Mustang gets a new look, but the Shelby models stick with last years sheet metal, though there are other updates.

7. It's under-powered considering what else is available for the 2018 MY.

Hopefully we will get a new GT500 that has the power to trounce the competition and still keep the handling of the GT350.

Yeah, 526 hp is a bunch but when you look at how easy it is to go to 450-475 rwhp on an unopened Coyote, the larger 5.2 really seems that it should be at well over 550 crank-hp.
And to hear it's gutless below 3500-4000 rpm, come on Ford ... give it some 4.10's in the back, let it get off the line better ... you have stock 455-hp '16+ Camaros wiping the floor with it ...

Kind of strange that they didnt just tweak the CJ manifold a little, and put some true headers on the car from the factory. I think it would have been cool if they used a 5.8L version of the engine (ala 69-70 gt350). Probably could have been 600hp N/A

Gutless at low rpm should be expected. Anytime a coyote is setup for high N/A power it trades low end for top end.

When the current 5.2 engine was in development, many people found the displacement surprising. "Supposedly," a flat plane crank V8 starts to have issues once over about 4.5 liters displacement. I read this in many places but do not remember the technical reasons why. But if that is the case, I doubt we'll see a FPC V8 in the 5.8 liter displacement any time soon.

I am willing to bet the redline for the 5.2 is lower than it could have been with a 4.5 and that 4.5 could have put out the same hp by revving higher. The problem is that most cars spend more time on the street than track and torque makes for easier day to day driving. Ford wants this as their track car and knows many driving enthusiasts prefer an NA engine over a boosted one.

It is crazy to think we live in a car-world where 526 hp is not that much.

Re-read this article to really realize how far we have come.

In summary, 0-60 in 6.8, top speed of 129, lateral acceleration of .79 g wrapped in a package that commands C&D to write, "Ford has certainly got the looks right and it's performance is truly potent. It's the hottest car in this test by far." Based on this I would be thrilled with a 2018 and "only" 460 hp.
