Non-Perf Pack GT suspension upgrades

As someone who is pretty ignorant of types and costs/benefits of suspension component upgrades, I would like to get opinions about what would be a logical upgrade path for a GT without the performance package. For me, my GT will always be a DD. I'll never hit the track, I am sure, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to improve its handling. I just ordered a ruby red GT premium coupe with manual trans and 3.55 rear end. I am planning to add the Borla S Type Catbacks first, 'cause it has to sound bad, before anything else, but after that..

There isn't much available for the 2015's yet, so your suspension options are limited.

Others can chime in, but as far as I've seen, your options are the Ford OEM struts and shocks from the Performance Package, along with a moderate selection of lowering springs, or the Ford OEM Performance Package springs if you want to stiffen it up without lowering the car.

I driven lots of Mustangs, and my preference is stock GT suspension under most conditions. I also prefer Linear rate springs over Progressive rate springs. and almost every available aftermarket spring, other than race types, are progressive.

Lastly, there are some sway bars and strut tower braces available, but you won't really need those for a daily driver.

Thanks, kn. I didn't think about the Ford OEM parts. Do you think those would be a drop-in? That might be a good way to start. I think all of the items in the PP would make good upgrades, if I could add them. I would have ordered the pkg, but I just couldn't go with the wheels and tires.

You get so much more with the Performance Package for only $2k, but is easily worth $4k if done post purchase. Switch your order to the Performance Package and save some money for different wheels, then sell the ones that come with the car.

The 15" 6-piston Brembo brakes are worth it, and one of the primary reasons I bought one. If you are already wanting 3.55's with a manual transmission already, then the difference to 3.73's is minimal plus you get the Torsen differential, which is a $1k upgrade post purchase.

Otherwise, yes, the Performance Package struts, rear shocks, and springs are a direct swap, but you will need a re-alignment if you lower the rear subframe to swap the rear springs as shown in a few YouTube videos.

Agreed. Sell your wheels and tires and get whatever you want. Big brakes will limit your sizes though. Also no spare tire option at all.

A ruby red premium has to be the best looking option... (I agree with not liking the PP wheels) but! As stated above, the package minus the wheels is a great bang for your buck. I'd say change your order if you can and then trade someone wheels.

If you keep your premium, stickier tires and lowering springs are usually good options for everyday driving on an otherwise stock car. Tires alone shorten braking distances, increase cornering g's, and can cut your 1/4mi times down.
If I remember right, Discount Tire will give you a good amount of credit towards new tires if you take your car, like straight there, and swap.
A lot of guys do that with truck tires when looking for a more aggressive tread.

Thanks for that suggestion, kn, and everyone. Believe it or not, I decided I *was* going to change the order and called Ford Customer Assistance and they said because I already had a VIN and it was in order processing, I couldn't change it! Wouldn't you know it! I had checked on line and found some nice all season tires, Michelin Sports AS3, that looked real good, so I would have driven it for the summer and popped for the all seasons in the fall. Darn! Oh, well. I do love the car I ordered. Thanks, guys!

Update: Krohn, that would have been even better!

Hi, all. Just thought I would update you. My dealer said he was sure he could sell the GT I ordered if I didn't buy it, so he ordered a new GT PP for me. Thanks for your input and I love my dealer! However, it does reset my clock. Oh, well. It will be worth it. Thanks, again, for your suggestions!

I installed a set of F/R Steeda sway bars, whgich are stiffer than the PP option. The car corners flat and smooth. I ordered an auto with 3.55 gears and the 20x9 wheels with 265/35x20 tires and I am VERY happy with everything so far.

Those are beautiful wheels, the nicest, I think. I wound up ordering the pp, and I am getting a set of the silver FR pp wheels, which I will use except in winter, and got a set of winter 265/40R19 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4's for the black pp wheels. I was wondering about the 265 width on the winter tires on the front, but I see that's what the 20x9's wear. So that should be good.

However, of course, I still am waiting for the car...
