Regarding sound -- yeah the muffler makes the biggest difference; removing the resonators is probably next; and the pipes make the least difference to the sound. So I would suggest starting with mufflers (aka "axle back") and then go from there. And that used to be so easy to do . . .

I agree Bert, it's strange to me also. I'm not comfortable enough with my measuring skills to do it myself, so I would have to take it to a shop.

There is another issue with going "loud": the cops. There is conflicting information here in NH as to whether or not the local and/or state cops can stop you and give you a ticket for having (in their opinion) a very loud exhaust. Anyone have any insight into this?

It's not necessarily annoying in short drives. But for longer drives, it can wear you out, maybe even make you feel sick.

If you've never experienced drone, it would be like someone humming a low note that never changes pitch, and the sound just engulfs you. No discernable direction.

With my '06, I had Borla Stingers with resonators welded in to reduce drone. 2 years ago the welds rusted through, and I had to replace the resonators. They were obviously different than what I had, because I had slight drone at about 59mph. So I either had to drive about 63 or 56 to avoid it. So drone was happening right at my normal highway cruising speed.

I just bought the roush axle backs and I love them. Would highly recommend them. They give the car a great sound but its not obnoxious. Install was under an hour. Jack the car up, cut and clamp them on.

As for videos American Muscle does have some good ones - so does CJ Pony parts. The removal of the stock system is fairly straight fwd as long as you have a decent set of ramps or some jack stands and a low profile jack that plays nice with your car. Installation uses the same clamps and mounting points at the axle.and the rear valence unless you're converting to quad exhaust tips.

Anyone running the catback MagnaFlow Competitions? I'm seriously considering them. It's either that or the street setup, because I want this car to sound like it's "supposed to".

A little late on the response draw, but I have the MBRP axle back.. the loud raspy thundering noise was all I was after, and I got it! Its night and day from plain ol' stock pipes that had no noise what-so-ever. The cops dont bother me, but heads turn when she starts up.
And yes, I had to cut the stock pipes to install these. It was pretty easy with a sawzall, However, I felt like the included clamps were not strong enough to support the dual tip on each side, so I had a friend weld the pipes and tossed the clamps. I couldnt be happier with the sound, and the double dual tips look sharp!

2011 3.7
Borla atak axle backs, short tube headers and a cat delete.
There is no drone or rasp. Very deep tone for a v6.

I bought theMBRP XP Series Cat-Back Exhaust w/ H-Pipe - Street Version for my GT and I like them in low RPMs (prob til about 3000) after that they get pretty raspy so it’s the best of both worlds if that’s what your looking for. It’s a bit louder than stock but not loud enough to wake up your neighbors.

Personally.... I used a X pipe(doesnt really matter the brand they all work the same) and I went with a C&L Sport axle back(poor mans Roush) and I think the sound is perfect blend of loud and soft ...when cruising around at cruising speeds the drone isnt horrible and its not deaf loud...but when you get on it or during acceleration it gets loud in a hurry ... I do wish I went with the C&L Muffler delete Axle back ....but that will come later on when the car isnt my daily ..
