Are the EcoBoost Mustangs Losing Power?

Does it feel like your EcoBoost Mustang is getting a little slower off the line? Well, that actually could be the case.

Motor Trend needs to be reminded the accelerator is the large petal to the far right.

ccording to Motor Trend, S550s equipped with the four-cylinder engines have been posting slower times in a series of performance tests. To date, the news source has tested four EcoBoost Mustangs, each one posting either a slower 0 – 60 mph run or quarter-mile time than earlier models tested.

The reason for the slower times? Well, apparently a case of “odd throttle mapping,” as Motor Trend calls it, which basically means the computer is pulling power when the clutch is released. The news source also cites an issue with the Performance Package when the stock 3.31:1 limited-slip rear axle is replaced with a 3.55:1 limited-slip rear axle, which affects the car’s shifting.

But the full answer as to why the four-cylinder Mustangs seem to be getting slower with each model tested is still a bit of mystery. Any thoughts?

It doesn't sound like specific cars get slower like the headline implies, but that newer models are tuned differently and posting slower times.

Seriously, Motor Trend. I stopped using them as a source when they selected the Chevy Vega as Car of the Year!
