BTW, Jim, i had the following combinations on my car:
1. Vogtlands with Orange Koni's - hated it, stiff like hell
2. Steeda Sports with Orange Koni's - better but still harsh
3. Steeda Sports with GT500 Struts/Shocks - better but still not happy
4. H&R OE Sports with Koni FSD - very nice combination
5. GT500KR suspension - also good, got it new cheap for $179 (springs, shocks/struts) - still have that in my basement - assembled
6. 2013 GT500 suspension (electric Bilsteins + OE Springs) - The best. If you want it soft and nice for crappy roads, put it in N and it rides very comfortable, put it in S and go carving canyon roads - LOVE IT

What size are your wheels/tires ? Larger diameters as in 20'' wheels and tires will also affect ride quality as well.. Just saying

Btw: Are you sure that you were using Koni FSD struts/shocks ? I just checked both tire rack and Koni's websites.. Neither list the FSD for 2005-2014 Mustang.. They list only the Koni SRT.T orange and Koni sport yellow adjustable's..

 

Im installing a new suspension on mine ans do not want to go Konis. what are the Bilesteins Electric? Alsolooking at eiback.

 

The electronic Bilsteins were a part of the 13-14 GT500 Performance Package. They're not easily retrofitted to any other car and are pretty pricey.

The Koni Yellows are a good all around shock. That said, I had the Maximum Motorsports Spec Bilsteins on my 03 GT - I would do those again. They're not adjustable but they were just perfect out of the box!

Having had both, yeah I think I'd do the Bilsteins over the Koni's. On super smooth roads the Koni's were great, but even on the softest setting they were still kinda harsh for me - I had mine paired with the Steeda Boss 302 springs and then with H&R Super sport springs.

I had the Bilsteins paired with Eibach Pro-kit and it rode amazing. It's not apples to apples comparison, being SN95 and S197 but the same principles apply.

 

I know exactly where your coming from, as I've also noticed that when going over uneven pavement and bumps, the Koni's do seem a bit harsh.. Right now they're set in between soft and hard, so I don't know what they feel like at the softest setting yet.. I also have them paired with the Eibach Pro-kit springs as well..

In the meantime, I'll try them out at the softest setting and see if that helps out enough

 

I run my koni yellows in full soft for daily driving!
And crank them up for the track 1/2 for autocross, about 3/4 for the road course near me!

What do the GT 500 mounts give you? I was looking at the Steedas?

Are they a must have?

 

The factory strut mount will likely fall apart when you take your old struts out.

GT500s are the cheapest option. And you can mount them backwards to get more negative camber. They will likely be the easiest on harshness and NVH since there is a good mount of rubber in them.

Steeda mounts are of great quality, and allow even more camber adjustments. I run mine at -2degrees. I love mine

 

So Koni orange compares to yellow on full soft, yes?

 

When you run your koni yellows at full soft, how is the ride quality, is it near stock or more on the harsh or stiff side ? My koni yellows are also paired with Eibach Pro-Kit Springs and GT500 strut mounts..

Wish I could answer your question Jim.. Unfortunately I've never owned the koni oranges, so I really can't provide you with a comparison..

 

same here. I've only had the yellows. I would assume yellows on full soft are similar to Orange.

I find yellows on full soft ok for they street With Steeda Sports. They only feel harsh over very abrubt bumps. But on the road course I have them at 3 clicks. Almost full firm.

 

I worked with Steeda on selecting my suspension upgrades and they said that the oranges were a good match with the sport springs about the same firmness as yellows on full soft.

 

I haven't tried them at full soft yet, as I've only had them adjusted between the soft and firm settings.. In the meantime, I'll use the full soft setting and hopefully that'll make enough of a difference, otherwise I may have to look into switching from my Eibach pro-springs and purchase Steeda sport springs or consider re-installing my stock springs which I really don't want to do unless I absolutely have to

 

I don't blame you man! That would be a lot of work.

I hope full soft will be enough. I think it will. Even if you're just 1 click, or a half a turn away from full soft, it makes a difference. Good luck! Let us know!

 

And I definitely don't want to replace the Koni yellows either, as I've only had them a little over a year.. Although Bilsteins are supposedly better quality over Koni, there also much more expensive as well and aren't adjustable..

I also wouldn't know if changing over from Eibach pro-kit springs to Steeda sport springs would even make much of a difference or if any at all anyhow

Hopefully full soft will be enough like you said.. In the meantime, I'll definitely keep you posted and follow up.. However it will be awhile as my car is in storage until spring lol.

 

I have the steeda sport springs and koni sports too. On full soft, they are much better. I have to admit I have been considering switching to bilstein. I had h and r springs and bilstein on my Audi A4 and it was pretty impressive. I read a lot of stuff on the forum and truthfully I regret going with the koni. On rough roads, it's uncomfortable.

 

Just get bags and be done with it

Oddly, it's having Koni's on my daily Escape that made me realize how harsh they were on my Mustang. That and having bags, which make the car ride like something from a German marque.
