Long term experience with max/extreme performance street tires?

It's nearly impossible to find information on how the super sticky street tires out there hold up to time/use/mileage...

Which tires have you run for a year or more? How are they holding up?

Any regrets?

I'm running Continental DW, which are Max Summer tires, on my '12 VW GTI.

I did a few track days on them and drove them through this last winter and they have held up well.

I still have plenty of tread left as well.

Once the stock Michelin Pilots on my '13 GT go, I'll probably look into getting some DW's for it in 245/45-19.

My experience shows with normal day to day driving on tires with treadwear rating under 200 you will get from 10,000 to 18,000 miles out of them.

Long term and MAX / Extreme summer tires is an oxymoron. I put 18K on mine and they have one summer left on them and they are done.

Who really expects long life out of max summer tires? There are no free lunches, and tires are no exception. Tire life and tire grip are generally inversely proportional.

Did anyone in this thread say they expect long life out of a max performance summer tire, or that they expect free lunch?

To contribute to the subject question, I will add that I have 28k/4years on my continental DW tires (max summer) and they still have some tread but this past year they have lost grip and gotten noisier. I'm replacing them this spring, and responses in this thread might help me decide to stick with the conti or go with something stickier. Although I don't put a lot of miles on the car each year, these tires have seen 3-4 autox each year and 2 track days. 275/35 on 19x10" wheels. I hope this helps. No complaints on the DW tires, but I would appreciate a little more steering response and overall grip. Tires did not stick at autox in the last ~10k miles but are fine on the commute around town.

I'm still impressed by my sumitomo htr z III tires that I used for almost 1200 road course miles. They chunked cause they got over temped at the track during a couple events but they still have probably 40% tread. And they are cheap. Not an amazing tire in terms of grip or noise but it's treated me well last season. I'm on slicks now though and won't ever look back

That said, 15-25k sounds about right for tires on the mustang.

I run M/T ET Street radials and only usually get one season out of them. Track passes kill them.

I noted you are from CT,,,, Remember these summer max tires usually have a temperature limit of about 45 degrees and they are not kidding. Below that temp the tires have little grip and can even be damaged.
How do I know? I totalled a car in 20 degree weather when the Bridgestone S04's let go as if I was driving on ice but I was not. A painful lesson for me and my insurance company.

I ran my 255/40/19 stock pirelli tires, for 10 auto cross events and daily driving, had 9K mi. on them, still have 50%+ tread but after heat cycling so many times lost some grip!
I got new rims with the same pirelli tires but 275/40/19 on a 19"x9 1/2" rims.
The wider rim and tire made so much more grip, (I had my first autocross this last weekend) they were great!
I will run my stock tires and rims for daily driving till they wear out.
But I live in California, so warm temps and little rain over winter, they work all year long for me!
I know people on this site like to trash talk pirelli tires but they have worked great for me as daily drivers and on the race track!

Thanks folks. Sorry to hear you wrecked your car in cold temps, helpful lesson to some others perhaps. My car sleeps under its cover once the temp is before 40F.

I am curious about the Bridgestone potenza s04 (and s001 actually) if there are comments to add on summer performance. They appear very similar tho the conti but slightly less treadware rating and less cost. Are they responsive? Are they noisy? Do they wear out quicker than expected?

I am going to get the S04 in 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 for my BMW 540 later this year. I am currently running Potenza 760 sports in the same size now. I don't put a lot of miles in my car but they are 5 years old now.

I'm running Invo's 295-35's and they are 50% gone after 5k miles with moderate spirited driving.

I had 35k miles on my Focus ST when I traded it for the Mustang. About 26k of those miles were on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 max performance summer tires and they had close to 1/2 the tread left. Note: no track days just spirited daily driving.

I've had 7 Mustangs since 1997 and have used Pirelli, Fusion (Michelin make-believes), Kuhmo. Yokohama, Nitto, and Continental DWs. The Continentals are the best all-round tire by far, and not that expensive. Great handling and decent tire life...but my next set for my '15 GT will be Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

I got a bubble on side wall of Pirelli after 13 k . I was thinking of replacing 2 tires with either mich pilot or nt05 and put on rear. Maybe 275 285 or 295 if the track pack 9" wheels can handle that wide. Good idea or not? I have a 14 gt

Direzza Spec II outperformed all of them. S04, MPSS, Rival, DW....all of them.

I'm going to go for some Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's for my track only tires probably on some SVE 19x9.5's.

Pirelli's are going on probably saturday since the day temps are getting into the 60's.

Those Direzza ZII Star Spec look pretty nice too. I can get 4x 255/45-18 for under $900. That's the same price as staggering 255/45-18f-285/40-18r Continental ContactExtreme DWs. Now I gotta think about this.

It depends on how you want the handling bias to feel. Driver preference really. I like the neutral feeling running squared.
