Pro-Hobbyist Michigan Racing Bill Introduced

While the bill will not be considered in 2010, we are attempting to gather support in the legislature when it reconvenes in January.

http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=62825

Legislation (H.B. 6377) that would allow any municipality to issue a permit for a sanctioned motor vehicle racing event on highways, streets or airport runways within its geographical jurisdiction has been introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives. Current Michigan law only allows cities to issue these permits. This bill would allow counties, cities, villages or townships to issue similar permits.

We Urge You to Contact ALL Members of the Michigan House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee Immediately (List Below) to Request Their Support for H.B. 6377

H.B. 6377 would promote legal racing in Michigan and boost the state’s tourism sector and help rural communities.

H.B. 6377 acknowledges that rural paved highways and roads are the best places for legal open road racing.

H.B. 6377 would make it easier for event organizers to secure one permit at the county level, rather than securing permits from each government entity – federal, state or local – with jurisdiction along the race route.

H.B. 6377 would provide that airports could be used for shootouts and that local governments would have the authority to close airport runways for this purpose.

Please contact members of the Michigan House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support for H.B. 6377.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance.

HB6377 is important. Primarily, it would promote legal racing by simplifying the permit process for event organizers. Under this bill, organizers would have to secure just a county permit as opposed to one at each level (federal, state, or local) along the race route. HB6377 allows airports to be used for legal racing events, providing local governments the authority to close airport runways for such use. Finally, it would help provide relief to Michigan’s ailing tourism industry.
