This thread has good info. I just ordered my AST 5200's with 850lb front and 400lb rear springs.

BUT. I run Toyo RS1 competition slicks and a carbon fiber rear wing. This makes a big difference.

Think of it this way...with a stiff suspension there is less body roll and thus more lateral G's are put onto the tires. But also there is more contact patch on all 4 tires and more even weight distribution because of less roll.

Street tires will give up "sooner" under this faster and stronger lateral force....

But if you want a set of new rear Corsa's for your car, I have a stickered pair I'll sell for cheap.

Another thing AST says is that you have to replace all your bushings with this suspension....

Our preference is Eibach, but their tolerances are tighter than any other spring manufacturer on the market that we have seen thus far.

[QUOTE=Brandon302;6675155]The competition Mustangs run a smaller or no bar in the rear to increase grip by allowing the back to be as soft as possible, plus with higher spring rates you're probably over stiffening the back with a bar.
QUOTE]

I tried that no rear bar thing for a while and softer springs...this is what happened.

(not my car and not this extreme...but you get the idea)

This isn't really ideal in Auto-X. On a road course it's probably not an issue as much or at all.

That's not me. I didn't get any pictures of when my car was doing that. That was just the best example pic I could find in short order...

I was advising OP on road course, I can see that not being ideal for Solo but it is also a completely different animal then a road course. Awesome pic, it's fun to see the Roush cars doing this on the track.

I'm not *that* superstitious...but I don't think I want the possible convenience of racing near a cemetery.

And I've been following this thread from the start...and had to laugh a little bit at the probable loss of time due to the tires. I'm sure you'll be going faster once you sort out the suspension...and get some better tires!

Reminds me of that 'max braking performance' thread...tires matter.

well the fox body does have 5 struts... 4 on the corners, and the body itself.

On our 05-09 cars we ran no bar if we could, or an 18-19mm if the track was very high speed.

The 10+ cars we usually run a 18mm bar.

Very true! My 86GT (SOLO and Open Track) was a flexible flyer until I put in a 8 pt cage and thru-da-floor subframe connectors. You could see daylight through the hatch opening with each loaded turn.

Also remember, the Fox body cars (and even SN95) cars had the quadrabind suspension in the rear. The S197 cars do react differently (albeit not crazy different) to suspension changes. I remember running 1100# springs in the front of the 86GT (before I went to coil-overs, griggs, IPS, etc) just to keep the front suspension from working as designed

Picture below should be with Griggs front K-member and adjustable arms. Rear would be an IPS parallel 4-link with a watts-link. Coil-overs at all 4 corners (think it was 500/200) with a 4cyl front bar and no rear bar. Pretty sure I had ABS in the car by this event as well.

Great to see another 4 eye, since I believe I lot of people convert the fronts to run the 87+ head light housings. Was the car still pretty streetable with the 500/200 spring setup?

Well.. it also had a 347cu stroker with a solid roller cam... 420 rwph/400lbft on pump gas... so streetable... yeah, I drove it on the street. It also ran 10's in the 1/4 at 123mph . Friends at the gas station kept me in inspection stickers.

Driving it from Houston to College Station (TAMSCC) for an event... we hit a bump and the spring in the passenger side corbeau inserted itself into my co-driver's leg.

Definitely streetable

Maybe not so much so now that I'm older

Dean, would you recommend running an 18mm rear bar (on loose?) with 700lb/400lb spring rates on AST 5200's? Or should I just ditch the rear sway because of the higher spring rate?

On 2012 Boss.

(Shamelessly threadjacking.....sorry!!)

Just to clarify, this is Bill (not Dean).

We run around a 600/300 setup and an 18mm rear bar for most courses. On the 05-09 body we ran no rear bar quite often, but the new car likes to have something in there.

The 700/400 still seems very stiff, but it really depends on what the car weighs. All our cars are fully stripped so we're carrying around several hundred pounds less than a stock car.

On a positive note, the car looks amazing driving around the track....like it's riding on rails. Even the 458 chasing me has more body roll.....

yeah looks like you're not even cornering!

Do you have telemetry in the car?

Unfortunately no telemetry, maybe that should be the next investment after the Hoosier R6's.
