Tiger Racing CF Hood - Black/Red
For those of you with the CF hood do you think you could leave the vents CF and paint the rest of the hood? I've heard the finish is not that great but that might look cool if the vents with a coat of clear-coat would look nice.
but I am getting it painted with the same pattern as Kendall...
Yes mine was primed and the small size of the louvers and curvy shape makes getting a nice smooth pattern hard. The carbon is so thin and light that when they bond the bottom brace to the top surface it distorts so quite a bit of work is needed to get a finish like the OP's car. I had a quick body color paint job done and it will have to be done again to make it look anywhere near as good as the OPs.
I was thinking like you, when it came I realized it would not work out with the CF look. We have a buddy that got the FG version and it looked great and pretty sure it took a lot less work to prep and paint.
I have the FG version and it also needs a lot of prep work. Mines been at the paint shop for a while. I figured it was better to have them take their time and do a great job than rush it and regret it later. It'll be red / black. The converse of the OP.
Anyone planning to do red with black across the whole center like the 302S press car?
I prefer that style over painting the vents the accent color. If I buy a S hood I might just paint the whole hood Kona Blue and not highlight the vents. I've also been thinking of taking the white decal off of my hood. I like the look of the plain hood on the LS cars.
I am admittedly pretty naive when it comes to paint, prep, and body work. That said, I don't think the paint shop did a lot of prep work on the CF hood. From Tiger, the hood comes with a gray primer. I specifically told the shop that they could not sand below this gray. But I also told them I didn't want or expect them to do a lot of work to take care of filling and trying to take the natural CF "waves" and "quirks" out of the hood. I simply didn't want to add any add'l weight and frankly, though I wanted it to look nice, it is more function over form for me. No doubt, the paint shop did a great job with the quality of the paint, smoothness, lack or orange peel, etc.... but the CF quirks are still very visible - and I like them.
