Taking weight off the front end

Guys-

Taking weight out of the front is one of the best things we can do to improve our cars. Let's list the components or ideas that will help us all accomplish this.

First up: Radiator Support from Steeda: http://www.steeda.com/store/2011-up-...r-support.html

Move the battery to the trunk.

The cheapest mod is to go on a diet.

I know this isn't all off the front, but here's what I've got:

Enkei PF01 wheels/Nitto Tires:
Front 59 stock vs 42 - 17 lbs each x 2 = 34 lbs
Rear 60.5 stock vs 47.5 - 13 lbs each x 2 = 26 lbs

DBA 5000 front rotors 28 stock vs 20 - 8lbs each x 2 = 16 lbs

Corsa Extreme axle backs (pair) 56 lbs stock vs 24 lbs = 32 lbs.

Total weight savings so far is 108 lbs and 76 of that is rotating mass which gives a bigger benefit.

Unsprung weight:

Lighter wheels

I suspect that the suspension is designed & optimized with the factory F-R weight ratio. Lightening the front may affect the overall handling?

Carbon fiber hood, lighter bumper supports, brake rotors with aluminum hats. If you pull enough weight off, you may need adjustable coil-overs to adjust the cross-weights (does not help with F-R or L-R though).

While on this subject, did anyone put their Boss on scales to get the corner and cross-weights? Just curious to know what the factory cross-weights are.

I think cloud9 has the best idea here. He kills two birds with his brake and tire setup. Better stopping and grip as well as a weight lose. A large percentage of which is unsprung which makes a HUGE difference. Lightning up the exhaust and front seats is the next "value" step. From then on it gets a lot more expensive to remove weight.......

Some good ideas here guys! If possible we should try and put $'s/lb savings. For example the radiator support in my first post would work out to about $20/lb saved. And yes, I guess I could reduce the size of my fuel tank for the s@x machine for free...

Drill holes in "fake mesh" area in grill and remove hood decal.

You are correct, it will affect handling, braking and acceleration. All improve!

My racing buddy and I did on his scales. I'll have to post the data later from home. I recall they were pretty good to start off with.

I saved 17.5 lbs off my front end by replacing the stock battery with an Odyssey PC680 battery. The Odyssey PC545 I had in my Bullitt was another 3 lbs lighter.

Braking and acceleration yes. Handling no if you only remove weight from the front - it may be no worse, but it won't be any better.

I would love to hear your reasoning on the handling piece because I'm not buying it.
