THE RED KEY!!!!
This says a lot:
“We installed the 302R software on the same PCM that held the stock Boss software,” says Seaman. “Then the controls engineers developed a software system to activate one or the other, depending upon which key was used to start the vehicle. Really, all the parts to make this work existed – the Ford MyKey® system was already using the PATS transceiver to perform specific actions based on the key used to start the car, and the PCM was flexible enough to handle multiple control modules. It was just putting everything together.”
pretty soon they might offer a system like the BMW M5 and M6 a lower power mode to maximize fuel economy (for CAFE) and a "power" button to switch to the full power tune. think about a 5.0 making 300hp and 30 mpg then a push of a button to 440 hp and race tune
Awesome. I would LOVE to think that we actually have a real race tune installed on here. They probably detuned it, but thinking that the engine itself is already detuned, maybe, just maybe, they didn't have to change the tune since the engine was already weaker.
But here's hoping!

But here's hoping!
I like the idea but I wondered why make it a key? The Corvette has a mode button which allows one to step through 4 setups on the fly. You can drive around in competitive mode then hit the button and the exhaust gets quite and the suspension mellows out. Very cool.
I think the key is a great idea because I will be the only one who can put the car into track mode. Can the Corvette-style push-button mode changers be disabled? I'm thinking ahead 16 years when my infant son will want to borrow the car....
Bingo.. you hit the nail on the head.
I like the key because it is plain way cooler than "sport mode" button like every car has (it does way more than a typical sport mode and Ford needs to showcase this).
I also think it likely that the feature is a part of the overall strategy to keep the entry cost low while giving enthusiasts exactly what they want.
If I was in charge of the program and wanted to get the 302R tuning into the program but knew management would never go for it....how about an add on that would sell like crazy, give my customers exactly what they want and underpin the business case for the vehicle. Seems like a huge win.
The Boss is shaping up to be a very strange car. I don't think Ford has realized that they will be selling them for way less than they could. There are very few times when the most desirable model doesn't cost the most. If Ford priced the Boss the same as the GT500 they would still sell every one of them. The Boss is an enthusiasts wet dream (at least for those that like tracks with turns).

Well since you have to BUY the red key separately, as it's not included with the car, it would seem Ford is able to squeeze a little bit more money from everyone. We need to start a poll on how much the red key is going to cost?
I'm interested to see the implementation of the dual-path PCM after the Boss is produced. I don't think it's justifiable to produce that component for a limited piece, then put it aside not to be used again. I could (just a hunch) see this coming as std. equip in '12 or '13, then FRPP coming out with their TracKey (with the FRPP logo on it) and the same thing.
Now, this may not come into play until '15 or later, but I really don't think that it's going anywhere.

I don't think he is saying that this particular car is the most desirable, but in the case that any car which happens to be the most desirable, may in fact, not be the most expensive.
I think if I had to put a cost on it, it'd be around $495. Only bad thing is you'll have to go to the dealer to get it installed (or an FRPP-qualified vendor/shop).
I'm waiting for official word if the PCM is the same. If so, you're absolutely right. Just depends on whether or not they'll tap that option as an accessory.

Ford could actually have quite a good little aftermarket from this type of thing. Lot's of owners would opt for this type of "tuning" that still gave them full warranty protection and a Red Key to show to all of their buddies.
