POST TRACK TIME WHEEL SHAKE

Need to know if anyone else has experienced this: after my first track day with the Boss, it's developed what appears to be wheel shake (front).
On the track, had Boss 302R wheels (18") along with Nitto NT-01 tires. Drove to the track and back with the race wheels/tires. On the way back, noticed a front wheel shake that feels the same as a wheel out of balance (not bad, just a little off balance). I chalked it up to wear and all the rubber stuck to the race tires.

Once home, put the factory wheels/tires back on and had the same problem. Took the wheels/tires in for balancing twice now, had some minor re-balancing done, and though it has improved significantly, I still have that minor shaking.

Questions:
1. Wasn't there an issue with EPAS on the GTs for this?
2. Can a TPMS sensor be loose?
3. Should I just take it back and have them balanced again?

Thanks!

I'd check balance of the wheel first, then check for any play in the wheel bearings/hubs.

After that it gets a bit more complex.

the gt EPAS issue I think was more just how the EPAS works in sport mode. In sport, it wouldn't cover up misbalance in wheels.
Possible, but I'd think the sensor would get trashed if it came off its stem

Maybe the tire went "out of round" ? Broke a cord? Flat spotted? Jack up each wheel and spin the tire. Watch the tread and the sidewalls to see if they are true and that they do not wobble up and down or in and out.

Are your wheels torqued correctly? It can make a difference. Star pattern and correct torque.

Don't think it's the tire if you changed from the track wheels (where it started) to a new set (and it's still there). Do you get any noises from the front end, especially when hot and turning slow? A few people have had there front bushings and front sway bar replaced. I'm currently waiting for my dealership to get the parts.

Could you have warped a rotor?

Thats true about the tires, should have read better. Rotors, stuck caliper, wheel bearings, drive shaft? A clutch or engine issue would be rpm related.

might also want to get the cars alignment checked out, i'd usually find that my alignment was out of whack after every couple of track events and I noticed the same thing on my V.

I agree - its your front rotors. I have the same problem after two days at the track. I checked them with a dial indicator for run-out. Mine are .005" out. Not too bad but I can definitely feel it in the steering wheel.

Thanks all, good advice. Lug nut torque is dead on, I'm very particular about that with the car on the track. I don't believe it's the rotors since it is no more pronounced under braking, and I don't feel it in the brake pedal (I've warped rotors before). Also, usually you don't feel warped rotors if you're not braking. The dealership has balanced them twice and has said that they think it's the tires (tire?) that could have been ruined some how. I'll take the wheels somewhere else for balancing and see what happens, and also check them for issues. By the way, no noise from the front end. 2006Mach1 may have the correct answer.

Hi StillIntense,

Please make an appointment with your Ford dealer as soon as possible. I have your VIN already, so please PM me with your dealer, mileage, and contact info so I can escalate this for you.

I had this in my GT500 and it was an alignment issue. The toe was way off. If you don't find it with the rebalance, I'd check the alignment. Heck, if you're going to track it, why not throw a set of c/c plates on and then have it aligned

I am at -2.2 and after prematurely cording the outside edges of my Hoosiers at MPH this weekend it's going into the shop tomorrow for -2.5.

Dang Gary, your problem is that you're driving too hard. Take it easy, enjoy life, slowdown! If I remember correctly that's a bit more camber than the Boss 302R teams dial in.

I have the same problem, M3's in particular.
The Boss is going to the dealership tomorrow to hopefully sort this out. Deysha, as usual, has been all over it.
I think that we should regard Deysha as the patron saint of Boss owners.

I also have this issue and thought it was the tires. Just got them balanced today and have the same problem. I have a slight shimmy in the wheel that goes away under braking. Let me know what they find out.
