Mods, harness bar vs. roll bar

I have done a number of events and have made/installed the list of initial intended mods

Brake duct
Trans scoop
Drilled grill, including the cross plastic fill-ins
Semi aggressive rear spoiler.
Track wheels/tires - 18x10, 275 Conti Extreme (used)
Trailer hitch
Small trailer
Camber plates (Vorshlag)
Strano front sway bar.
PFC track pads F/B
Sullivan pedals - black/orange, getting adonized.

After knowing enough about the sport and occasional wrecks, I know I need some better protection and get some better performance as well. I know I want the 5/6 pt harness and bar, along with the Hans or Simpson neck protector. I still give back seat rides to some interested sons, so I was going to keep the back seats and simply get the harness bar from Corbeau. But if I flip, am I screwed? If so, then I'll adjust the driving and bide my time until it is time for the conversion.

Also, feel free to comment on what is needed or unneeded from the list. I was wondering if I need more cooling, i.e. 302s radiator, vented hood, etc. I'm not interested in any HP/suspension mods at this time, and it sounds pretty good to me.

Depending on how hot of weather you will drive in, the modest grill mods may not be enough for cooling. However, easy enough to try. If the car is getting too hot, then you can always pop out the grill when you are at the track event.

I would highly recommend that you add some high performance, high temp brake fluid. You are going to easily boil the OEM fluid - especially with track pads.

Harness bars work great insofar that they let you use shoulder harnesses which in turn can snug you into the seat more firmly and let you focus on driving rather than staying in your seat! However, a roll-over with shoulder harnesses has the potential to be fatal. If the roof collapses, you have no where to go. I suppose the taller that you are, the greater that this risk is.

Thankyou, that is good enough for me. That orange powder coated Cooltech roll bar and Boss harness combo is pretty sweet. It'll just have to wait a bit. I do have Ate Blue DOT 4 brake fluid, and a Motul bleeder. Just figured that was a given.

We are happy with the bar in the Vorshlag GT.

We went with the Corbeau harness bar.

Kendall said it correct but a 302S can't hurt if you have the funds. Also what he said on the harness bar is good advise, I have cut corners here and there but I would never drive with a harness bar only.

Looking for more mods for rainy Sunday afternoon, take a look at the Ford Racing "P" spring. They work nice on track.

Very nice. The guys at Vorshlag provide excellent customer service, too. My wheels are the D Force wheels they have.

Where did you get the Corbeau bar and nice G Force Orange Harness?

Yeah I've seen those threads. Pretty neat seeing some of the guys transforming the street car into the 302s. Can't wait to see someone gut one out and get some 500 HP NA predator on the track scene.

For me, the car performs just fine. I just need to improve my skills, and enjoy every minute of it. I'll replace the rotors after I chew through the stocks.

Thanks.

ModernBeat (Jason) works at Vorshlag. The harnesses are red.

As John said, the harnesses are red and available from a lot of shops. The bar was a used item that Terry received in trade from a friend and local autocrosser.

And someone noted that it wasn't safe to use on the track. It's not rollover protection - that's for sure. But if you willing to run a harness in a car without a rollbar or cage, this is the safe way to do it. I've seen too many harnesses bolted in incorrectly. Many that will not provide any restraint in an accident after they pull through unreinforced sheetmetal, break bolts in tension that were ment for shear forces or have so much run that they end up stretching a foot or more in a collision.

I helped install one in a '13 GT and it wasnt so bad. IT'd be hard putting people in the back though.

I'm not what you would call 'on the smaller side'... but I'm barely able to get under the bar and into the back seat to clean the windows (definitely don't forget anything). My son (6) is a little spider monkey and has no trouble getting back there with the harness bar in place... unfortunately, I don't let him ride back there with the bar in place (might dent his noggin' if we were to get in an accident). Removal / re-installation isn't too bad if you have another set of hands to help hold up one side as you bolt it in.

It's been a while since I've contemplated the harness. After my last event, I had more or less decided upon the roll bar and harness, then eventually came to a rather sobering and humbling realization. After speaking with a number of experienced drivers and some eye opening videos, I realized that you can only be safe (it's all relative, I know) with the full cage, seat with head protectors, window net, Hans, the whole works. This is after getting to the point of pushing to the limit, and beyond. I now realize that I can only push the boss so far. I am still going with the Corbeau bar, Boss Crown Harnesses and clips from Cooltech, tow hooks from Cooltech, and a Hans device. I am still taking it to the track but I'll take it easy.*

I am now in the market for for a full out and out race vehicle, gutted, caged, and mean. Thinking maybe an e36. I know it's not what you guys want to hear, but I feel good about the decision.*

Nothing wrong going that route. My coworker is an SCCA instructor and has a nice street M3 and a full race silver one. Saw his garage last fall when he gave me a pair of jack stands. Bastard has TWO lifts in his garage-mahal.
