Ok so I have been debating on getting a mgw shifter. What I want to know is, is it that big a difference? Is it that much better on the 2nd to 3rd shifts? I know our car has a shorter shift already. has any body put it in a boss?

Get the heat shield too, you won't be sorry. The difference is night and day from the OEM wet noodle to a beefy last forever shifter. Watch all the vids on the MGW web site and you can see how well made it is. Looks aren't deceiving, it's bulletproof and will last as long as the car.

 

If your going to do ANY spirited driving, I would recommend it.

 

It is the only modification I have made to my Boss, and it is worth every penny, You will not regret it, night and day difference. I have confidence that I will find the gear I want, not hoping to find it with the original piece of crap.

 

The MGW is so much better than stock. I would ususlly miss 3rd at about 7000,but never since I got the MGW. Definatly worth the price.

Another question on this shifter. The instructions mention an adapter peice that helps keep down vibration (if i recall correctly - not in the garage right now) at the expense of a softer mushier shift. Has anyone used the adapter and/or used it and taken it out etc.?

Best mod you can make to an already near perfect car...

though by upgrading to the MGW, the tranmission's deficiences are even more exposed.

 

George at MGW said about a 3-4 week wait when I ordered mine. Very much worth the wait. Since I was about an hours drive of Augusta, He called me and said drive to the shop and he would do the install for free a few Saturdays ago. Off I went. Took George about 2-21/2 hours besides all the BSing.Nice guy and a good drive home. Love that shifter.

 

All it is is a piece of rubber to sit under the rear mount, put it on, it makes NO difference on shifter "looseness". But it eliminates a potential spot for vibration.

THE KEY thing installing this shifter is making sure the MGW boot is installed correctly. It must fully seal the floor opening, and seal on the shifter shaft. I used long needle nose pliers to pull the boot flange completely through the floor opening, the seal must be visible completely around the outside of the opening when looking from below in the tunnel. My unit is as quiet as the stock unit.

The MGW is the single best mod you can EVER buy for this car. Get it yesterday.

 

Actually, you will see that boot seals in THREE areas, the floor, the shifter body (in a groove) and the oval shifter shaft. Slipping the boot around the shifter body is a real PIA. You really need to be patient, but it is well worth it.

 

I installed the rubber adapter to keep things as quiet as possible, seems to be working great. I'd be nervous about using pliers on the boot for fear of tearing it. Working it with your fingers from the inside of the boot as explained by the supplemental instruction sheet was the way to go for me.

The hardest part of this install is going to be getting that shift ball off, so get a big strap wrench, and heat up that shaft for a good 10 minutes so it's very warm to the touch. Some owners have reported there was enough loctite on there that it felt like it was welded on. Took 5 attempts for me to get it off and I have big hands and a pretty strong grip.

Best advice I can give is to take your time, if possible have a helper for underneath the car, have the recommended tools on hand, and to watch the installation videos a few times. It's a great help. And order the heat shield, cheap insurance to keep the temps and noise down.
