Question Maintaining the vinyl stripes...

I'm curious what you guys do to keep your vinyl stripes from fading or peeling from washes/detailing. Do you guys put wax on them? Are there certain products that should be avoided?

Most guys don't wax them, from what I've read on different forums. But....many do use a spray on wax, including myself. I used Maguires. Is it good or bad? Only time will tell. I called 3M a few months ago and asked them what they recommend and they didn't even have a definitive answer. Only that it "should" be ok the put a light coat of wax on them.

I wax mine along with the car but as i approach the edge of the stripe i wax in line so i dont make a build up of wax at the edge. I have heard of people that use a tooth brush to clean this area but i dont want to shove anything there that might start a lifting process..........

I do the same. Light wax on stripes and in the stripe direction. Must be a Yellow blaze thing.

This stuff works great, after a wash and dry, spraying this stuff on shines them up and provides UV protection.

Do they make another color other than yellow blaze?

The auto wrap company that just did my roof said multi purpose windex (light coat on micro fiber cloth) works well for cleaning.

I tape the edges off when I wax my car with an orbital buffer. Then finish it by hand. The strips are plastic so they need protection.

I think this is a good method. I use rejex which is huge in the private aircraft detailing community.

I also have a 70 Boss 302 and the stripes are made of the same 3M material, (yellow blaze), in fact people go to great lengths to make sure the repo stripes have that same gold reflection! Not so long ago Marti works did a rerun of them and they sold out in weeks.

Anyway, most of the guys on the boss302.com forum recommend nothing more than pledge household spray wax...it's gotta work, these cars are 44+ years old now...

Hey guys,

I called 3M and after getting transferred to two different people, I spoke with Mary Ann who said the Boss stripes are actually 3M scotchlite reflective tape that can be purchased by the roll. She told me that I should only wash it with ph balanced soap and that I should put non-abrasive wax over the stripes with UV protection. She suggested that I use 3M perfect-it wax and even said I could use 3M Marine clean and shine wax for more UV protection. I explained to her that even if that's good for the stripes, there's no way I'm putting Marine wax on my car paint. She did say that the reflective tape is really strong stuff and 3M warranties it for 5 years on the sides of the car, but the hood is not covered. When I told her that many people say it's not a good idea to put wax over the stripes, she said that it's true for the matte racing tape which is textured (not smooth) but the scotchlite reflective tape should be treated like a professional paint job and can have wax placed on it.

I use Rejex also. Rejex is a polymer sealant, not a wax. Following is a quote from their web page....

"Recent UV testing on RejeX by two major protective film and vinyl graphic manufacurers showed that RejeX's UV protection qualities are so good, it can increase the life of protective films and vinyl graphics by as much as 50%."

Here is a link to the page itself.... http://www.rejex.com/rejexFAQ.html

I've had great experience with Rejex over the years. It goes on and comes off easily, does not leave white residue even on flat black plastics and lasts for many months.

Really not trying to sell anyone, just passing along my experience - but you're welcome. Rejex can be a little difficult to find but last fall I was able to find it at my local ACE Hardware.

I wanted to get something on my stripes to keep them from water spotting.

I emailed 3M. While the site lists it by the roll, the widest they have is 6"...
