I think you missed the point, he loved the car and thinks it's worthy of being finished much nicer. I read most of his articles (BTW he has a show on Speed) and he is a bit full of himself. He gets to drive exotic hardware all over the world. He just finished a live interview on WSJ about the Boss 302 but I missed most of it as I was reading the article. If you're familiar with Dan's work you'd have a better context for his comments. That said I'll take my Boss with crispy bacon please.

I generally like Dan Neil's writing (liked his short-lived show on Speed) and as much as it pains me to say, I have to agree 99% with his evisceration of the Boss's interior. The 1% with which I disagree is the aluminum dash insert, which I really like, and the Recaros, which he dismissed as okay. That said, I could not have afforded the car if Ford had loaded it with goodies, so I'm also glad it's spartan. I just wish there wasn't so much hard plastic on the doors and console.

And he's right about the M3 is in a different league, because the Boss bests it for 25 grand less!

We seemingly heard those same comments upon the release of the 2005 Mustangs within a year of its release. Fast forward to 2010, where many people praise the upgrades. Fast forward again to 2012 where dissatisfaction is expressed. Thus begins a new round of upgrades (I would guess) when the next Mustang comes out.

Ah, progress

PS - An Alcantara-covered wheel, an aluminum trim piece, Recaros, and softer plastics than the previous generation S197s cause me to say "nice upgrade". The fact that Boss's dynamic performance is being spoken in the same breath as "BMW M3" causes me to "nice upgrade"!

The plastic in the interior leaves a lot to be desired. I also like the dash insert. For me it's going to be all about driving this car. If I want something nice and cushy I'll drive my wife's car.

Dan Neil, as usual when he reviews Fords, missed the point of the Boss 302 entirely.

The Boss 302 is not a luxury car; its not supposed to be a direct competitor to the M3 in luxury features, it's a no frills track car for the street!

The problem with making a silk purse out of a sow's ear is that your purse will still smell faintly of bacon.
What's that old saying about the difference between BMWs and cactuses? The BMW has guys like Dan Neil on the inside!

No, he missed the whole point entirely of what the Boss IS. If the Boss had sheepskin carpets and hand skinned baby calf leather seats. This guy would be happy? Give me a break...

"Look at the dash - solid gold"
"Look at this carpet - fur"
"look at these windows" -- glass? -- "glass yea ... but we can see out and nobody can see in"

I want a car like this, after all all this stuff would make the Boss better and faster on the track, right? and that is what the Boss is all about, right I really like the personalized plate.

I could only read the first few lines of that review.

I enjoyed the article for what it was, a non-Mustang guy's opinion of the car. If you look past the fact that he may not fully understand what the BOSS is intended to be, you'll find a very honest review of the car's capabilities. He certainly doesn't short change the car in that regard.

I think he's just not comfortable being seen driving the Boss to the country club in his Argyle sweater but wishes he was.

Dude, I drive a BMW. Although truth be told I haven't driven it since I got my Boss. And yes the interior is nicer, but I have no complaints about the Boss. It feels "right."

My wife has an Altima SE. Loaded - leather power seats, wood dash, electric moon roof, everything you can think of for $20k less than my Boss. Even sitting still in the driveway my car kicks the crap out of hers. Which one do you think I would rather drive? I really like that the Boss has a spartan interior. I purchased it to drive and drive hard. It has everything it needs and nothing more. All of that other stuff is fluff for the Euro- wussies. (And now I will retire to my redneck Texan cave.)
