I have a buddy who purchased an LS a week or so ago and the car is (and will remain) in California for track venues but his home state is Hawaii. He is trying to complete the registration process and the HI DMV is asking for a "pencil rub" of the VIN on the engine. A LEO is coming to the location where the car is stored to be a witness to the "rub".

Just one small problem....

Anyone know where the engine VIN is on the Boss?

 

On top of the intake is the "plate" that has the LS serial number and the VIN of the car..not sure where it is on the block or IF it is...FORD experts??

 

I don't think there is one on the block. The shop manual doesn't say so:

Also, it seems weird that they would want it off the engine, since a car is it's chassis, not it's engine.

The State of PA does something similar requiring the pencil rub, Problem is, with most new cars, it's virtually impossible to acsess the VIN number which is usually buried underneath the the front windshield glass.

So, the State of PA will allow the new car owner to drive the car to a state inspection garage. The mechanic will then fill out the proper form verifing the VIN number,

Maybe HI has something similar in place for new car owners who can't get a VIN rubbing.

 

Thanks for the help guys. I know the feds REQUIRE that the block is stamped with the VIN... just can't seem to find it!

 

Could this be an old law? I was fairly certain VINs were no longer stamped on blocks. I know for a fact 2003 Ford cobra's did not have a VIN stamped into the block.

I just skimmed this, but dont see anything about block requirements.

 

Very specifically in what Dean posted -

"(f) The VIN for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, low speed vehicles, and trucks of 4536 kg or less GVWR shall be located inside the passenger compartment. It shall be readable, without moving any part of the vehicle, through the vehicle glazing under daylight lighting conditions by an observer having 20/20 vision (Snellen) whose eye-point is located outside the vehicle adjacent to the left windshield pillar. Each character in the VIN subject to this paragraph shall have a minimum height of 4 mm.
