My view is that the Ford powertrain engineers had a multitude of different existing oil filters to use and no reason they could not choose any one of them. If the forum members here were debating a GM Filter application for the Boss, that might a different story as those would likely be out of the realm of Ford's consideration. But, clearly the 820 and 500 filters were both filters that could work and Ford chose to specify the 500. I will use the 500 for these reasons.

They Do not, nor do they plan on doing so for such a tiny market.

want my .02 on this 5w50 oil?
too bad I'm going to type it anyway.

It's a crazy viscosity that not many company's are willing to develop,
= lot more motorcraft oil will be sold...
I have seen a lot of used oil analysis from the gt500 crowd's 5w50 motorcraft
it shears to a 40 weight in just a few heat cycles. so what good is calling for a 50 weight when it becomes a 40 so fast?

and the regular 5.0 takes a 5w20 that is quite the difference.

run what oil weight/brand makes you sleep well at night, but no more motorcraft 5w50 will be going into dads boss.

Have any links to used oil samples from Redline 5W50?

Changed the oil yesterday and the tech was about to install an 820 filter til he dropped the air flow pan(3 screws). He went back to the parts dept and got the 500s which is what was installed at the plant. It's smaller but obviously the right one to use. Has to be flow and filtering capacity. Bigger does NOT equate to better.

I did my first change today at 1580 miles. It was also pretty dark. I tried punching a hole in the filter, it doesnt help. The oil drains down the filter housing then drops onto a cross member then drains at various places. I will try the plastic bag over the filter next time. I dont want to imply I made a mess, but when I poted the used oil into the empty bottles, I only got 7 quarts. Maybe 1/2 gt left in the filter, 1/2 qt burnt in break-in(?), it takes a lot of paper towels to wipe up the remaining 1/2 qt.
I'm glad Fat Boss posted the side by side photos of the original filter and the FL500S. I went back and looked at those to make sure I didnt have the wrong filter.
My wife accused me of giving my Boss preferential treatment since I take my DD (Honda Element) to Jiffy Lube for oil.

Anyone have any thoughts on the K&N filter HP-2011? They (K&N) say it works for the Boss, but they also spec it for the GT, V6, and a lot of other engines. $13.98

I'll let you know soon enough - Boss arrives Tuesday, and I have one for my first oil change. I started using them a few years ago and K&Ns have been fantastic in general, so there's no hesitation in recommending the company in any case.

I'm doing my first oil change on the Boss this week.
I noticed the difference between the OEM filter that is on our cars and the 500s.

I just want to confirm, the 500s is the correct replacement filter for this car?

Thanks.
