Is the engine worth it over a standard GT?
Now that I'm sold on the look of the 2013 over the 2012, I've decided that I'm going to pull the trigger soon on a 2013. But here is my issue; If I should go with a Boss or the GT with track pack and Recaros.
Either car, I wont be keeping the suspension for long; I plan on upgrading to a good set of coilovers, different sway bars, watts link, and a few other goodies. I plan on modifying either car I get, so really the only thing that I would be getting the Boss for would be for the engine. Here is my question; is the engine worth the $10k difference? I can get X-Plan on the GT, and with the options that I want, I'll be right at $32k.
I am in love with the Deep Impact Blue too, so that's probably the other thing pulling me towards the GT. But if the engine is really that big of a difference, the price difference still might be worth it.
For those who that have driven both, can you talk to me about the differences in the feel of the engine alone?
Thanks,
-Scott

Remember me, Jerry from CTS-V forum.
the Boss motor is truly awesome
I know test drives in a Boss is not possible, unless you find one for sale privately.
But if your in the DFW area I'll be more that happy to give you a test drive.
FYI: We are planning another Five Star Ford Track day, Saturday Nov 17th
This private invite only event open to all cars (not just Fords) will allow passengers.
I'll be more than happy to take you around the track. And there will be Mustang GT there too so you can compare.

Anyways the boss engine is pretty strong, the gt is pretty nice as well but it depends what you are going to be doing with it. I mean unless you plan to super charge or anything either engine will be fine. The boss does have a better crankshaft and upgraded cam from the boss intake.
Anyways the tell you about the "aluminator engines" they are just fully built motors you can do anything to and are rated to handle 1000hp. You can beat the **** out of them and they are built for that. They are pretty nice but quite a bit expensive.
Anyways you would be fine with the gt engine, or the boss if you want a little more security with your engine.

In one word, yes.
Read the story from 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords below
5.0 Mustang's story on the "Road Runner" Engine
Also read the attached from Ford Media.
The car is built around the engine it's alot more than another 500 rpm's!

Speaking strictly on the $$ difference that Ford puts on the Coyote vs. the RoadRunner, I would say the Boss motor (by itself) is worth about $5000 over the Coyote motor.
But, in a racing environment, I believe the longevity of the Boss motor would equate to a somewhat higher value differential. The rotating assembly is balanced for 8500 rpm; combined with the better valve springs and sodium-filled exhaust valves, better bearings, rods etc. etc. etc. it all means that it will have a longer life in those high-stress conditions.
If I were planning on using the car for HPDE's and Open Track days, I would want the Boss motor..........

Think about this...an engineer from a competing company that regularly works on high level sports cars for a living, said that if he were to spend his own money, he would buy a Boss. Not a GT500, not a Corvette, not a ZL1 Camaro, not a Challenger SRT8. His professional opinion is the Boss is BETTER than the sum of its parts.

To me part of the price difference between the GT and the Boss besides the motor is also the suspension, so why pay extra when he is just going to rip it out anyways ?

True, however, the OP wants to mod the hell out of the car, rip out the suspension, etc. Why not just get a GT with recaros and track pack, and do the suspension over ?

I just got back from Track Attack last week.....I raced a Boss day 1 and a track prepped GT day 2. After racing them both back to back I can vouch that there is a freaking world of difference between the two motors. The Boss motor is really rev happy and pulls to redline. It's just more fun to drive.
I am more impressed with our cars than ever right now.

for example, the C&D Lightning Lap; there was about a 6 second difference between the GT and Boss. I wonder how much of that was suspension and tires vs. the motor?
