I sold it to a dealer, so private sale would have been a couple thousand more. But since I don't have to pay sales tax on the trade-in value on my new car trading in makes sense.

 

You are mistaken if you think that is a good deal.

For 11k miles I would think you could get closer to 36 or 38, that thing is still a baby.

 

Yes, a private sale in April or May would probably have gotten me $37K. In January I figure I'd be lucky to get $36K. Considering I get a $2K tax savings when I trade it in, 36-2=34. For $1K less I don't have to advertise it, deal with low ball offers, people showing up just to test drive it when they don't have the money etc.

A car just like mine recently sold on ebay. He only had 1,500 miles on it and got $37K.

One should always consider the amount paid for the vehicle one is trading for to see the complete deal/value/savings.

 

Good point, but in this case the trade in and new car deals are separate. Due to weird Texas laws this manufacturer is not allowed to sell cars in TX, so I'm buying it out of Colorado. They have a number of dealers that bid on my trade-in, and this was the best bid.

 

You're getting a decent trade-in. I traded in my 2012 Boss, which was like yours. However, mine was only a year-old with 3K miles. I got 38K trade-in and saved 2K of taxes on my new 2013 GT, which I purchased at x-plan.

 

I'm guessing you're referring to a Tesla. If that's the case, good for you! I'm dying to own a Model S.

But I don't really want to trade my Boss to do it.

 

I'd like to see what the Tesla pickup looks like about 5 yrs down the road. By then my Boss will have been paid off for a while... I got to drive a Tesla S, it really pulls hard, great performance. But worth almost 90k...? Not for me.

Yeah, Tesla Model S P85+. Motor trend got a 3.9s 0-60, and I've seen them run a 12.3s 1/4 mile. So I'm not really losing any straight line performance. It's not a track car like the Boss, but still tons of fun on the street. The instant torque is addicting. It makes it feel faster than the Boss, actually.

The Model S has been out for a little over a year now and it seems so far it has held up well. A few minor issues like door handles and stuff, but all quickly fixed under warranty. And Tesla will provide a loaner car, unlike Ford (that still annoys me).

I realize I'm being an early adapter here, with the risks (and excitement) that entails.

 

I was blown away with the Tesla, wow, what a machine. The overall design is amazing, and the cockpit with the touch panel display is truly revolutionary. The weird part is how totally silent it is!

This brand elevates the electric car to an entirely new level. Existing car companies have to try to 'think electric' with the design engineers who have been stuck in the traditional petrol powered mind set.

I believe Tesla is at an advantage where they started with a blank sheet of paper, and learned their lessons about QA when the first Roadsters were produced. The new S model is a success, and the new Model X will likely follow suit. It will be interesting to see how long they can sustain the no dealership business model as their market share grows.

If they continue to produce vehicles that only need tires, brakes and wiper blades, the higher initial cost can be offset by lower maintenance or petrol expenses.

One thing tho, if you think Boss tires and wheels are expensive... I think the tires on the Performance S model are almost 800 a pop! And you better consider road hazard coverage for the rims, I think they are Ferrari price range of over grand.

 

Could you let the sale of your car stand alone and walk away from the new purchase? It still sounds like all the dealers must be tied together for your trade value at one dealer to go against a new purchase at another dealer no matter where they are located.

Important thing is if you are happy with the deal. I bet we all have made ones others thing is wrong but it worked for us.

 

I don't think Tesla adds any money to the trade-in deal, so yes I believe this is a "true" trade-in value.

 

You did fine. 33T with 11k miles isn't bad... could be better, then again could be worst.

 

The dealer asked $39,800. They sold it in about a month. Don't know how much they sold it for, though.

 

Close to what I lost on my 12 Mustang I traded for the 14...25%...bought it Oct 2011 and traded it in Feb 2014.

 

Glad I won't have to worry about this, I'll be hanging onto my Boss for a very long time. How is the Model S treating you? What color did you get?
