Chevrolet ZL1-Road & Track Dis (Boss appears quicker :))
Chevrolet ZL1-Road & Track Dis (Boss appears quicker :))
I received my April 2012 Road & Track a few days ago and was pretty surprised by something I had wondered about last month.
Some of you probably read the ZL1 -vs- GT-R test(Team America Takes on Godzilla), wherein, as would be expected, the GT-R beat out the ZL1. The temperature was like 45 degrees and the elevation of the test location, Willcox, AZ, was 4400 feet. I figured that Road & Track was making excuses for the ZL1, as they said the conditions would hurt the ZL1. The times were 0-60 in 4.7, 1/4 mile in 12.9@113.1 MPH, and 0-100 in 10.2. I wondered if those numbers would make it into the Road Test Summary that is in each Road & Track magazine. Well in this months Road & Track, those numbers made it, and they are compared to Boss 302 LS times of 4.1, 12.3@117.2, and 9.1, respectively. The GT500 is 4.3, 12.4@119.4, and 8.9. Even a convertible GT has similar times to the ZL1. The Road Test Summary makes no mention of conditions.
I think some of the test results we have heard about and read about were with ringers, and not your typical ZL1. Who knows maybe the Boss 302 LS was a ringer
On a side note Fort Lauderdale Auto Show starts today. Not a world class event by any means, however, I hope they have a GB Boss...I'm dying to see what my car is going to look like in person....starts at 3:00 p.m. and I will be there shortly thereafter. If I don't hurry up and get my new car, I am never going to get any work done.

The conditions of the ZL1 were not ideal and it was a preproduction model.
Clearly the ZL1 will be faster than those times.
It's a slightly beefed up CTS-V engine.
The CTS-V which is several hundred pounds heavier runs 116+ mph trap speeds in the 1/4 mile.
In ideal conditions with a production ZL1 I would expect 1/4 mile times in the
12.0 @ 118-119 mph range, or look at it another way
It's got 30 more hp than the 11-12 GT500 and weighs only slightly more, so figure the power to weight ratio will be the same.
The ZL1 has wider rear tires than the 11-12 GT500 so it will probably be able to put the power down a bit more, therefore have slightly better ET's, but similar trap speeds of around 118-119 mph.
Oh and lastly I think that 117 mph trap on the Boss 302 was a bit of a ringer.
Most times I see are in the 115-116 range.
Which seems more realistic for the power to weight of the car.
