The Weekend Wrench is a 1965 Mustang coupe that is like many other similar Mustangs available on the market—it's a perfectly drivable Mustang that offers plenty of opportunity for upgrades for the weekend hobbyist.

We're going to be working on the Weekend Wrench over the next several months, showing you how you can transform a basic Mustang using some popular CJ Pony Parts products and make it into a beautiful Mustang you'd be proud to show off at a car show or cruise night.

Mustang Retro Sound Radio Model Two with Chrome Bezel and ***** AM/FM 1965-1966 | CJ Pony Parts

For our first installation on our new Weekend Wrench project car, we installed the new Model Two radio from Retro Sound, which is the only made-for-iPod® radio available for your classic Mustang with full control and charging for your iPod®/iPhone®. Flexible mounting options are available using Retro Sound's "InfiniMount" shaft/bracket system, letting you install your Model Two with any Retro Sound vehicle specific bezel, plate and **** kit.

The first step in this installation requires removing the old radio and disconnecting its wires. Next, you'll need to run your power wires and ground wire for the new Retro Sound radio, and then install the power harness. Assembling the radio isn't difficult, and Bill demonstrates installation in our Weekend Wrench project car.

Mustang Scott Drake Ignition Switch Installation 1965-1966


Mustang Scott Drake Ignition Switch Assembly 1965-1966 | CJ Pony Parts

If you're having starting issues or your Mustang shuts off while driving, you might be able to fix this problem by replacing the ignition switch. Bill shows how to install the Scott Drake Ignition Switch Assembly on our Weekend Wrench new project car.

First, you remove the lock cylinder and then separate the ignition switch from the ignition bezel. You'll then remove the plug and replace it with your new ignition switch, and place the switch back into your dash. Total installation takes under an hour.

Mustang Scott Drake Shorty Billet Antenna Installation 1965-1968


Mustang Scott Drake Radio Antenna Billet 8" Shorty With Round Base 1965-1968 | CJ Pony Parts

Add a touch of personalization to your 1965-1968 Mustang with a Shorty Billet 8" Antenna from Scott Drake. This antenna features a modern looking 8" antenna mast with a round base that is clear anodized and machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum.

Bill installs the Shorty Billet antenna on CJ's Weekend Wrench project car by first disconnecting the original antenna from the stereo. The next step includes removing the original antenna from the fender, but making sure to set aside the bracket to use for the new installation.

After fishing the new wire down into the fender and securing the new antenna, you will need to reconnect the wires to your radio under the dashboard. Installation takes up to 30 minutes.

Mustang Kick Panel Speaker Installation 1965-1966


Mustang Speaker Kick Panel With 2-Way 160 Watt Speaker Pair Coupe/Fastback 1965-1966 | CJ Pony Parts

These direct replacement Mustang kick panels will fit in the original location of your factory kick panels while adding a convenient location to add some extra speakers without having to cut the interior of your Mustang.

Bill begins this installation on our Weekend Wrench project car by removing the door seal plates. You then connect the speaker wire to the speaker harness, making sure the wire extends over the top metal of the kick panel. After sliding the kick panel into place, the last step is to return your door seal plate back to its location. Total installation takes up to half an hour.

The window regulator in our Weekend Wrench project car was practically shot, so Bill shows us how to replace it with a new part from Scott Drake, giving our 1965 Mustang coupe much more functional windows for the summer ahead.



After some interior restoration and a few modern upgrades to our Weekend Wrench project car, we realized that the trunk could use some attention. To continue modernizing this '65 coupe, we decided to switch out the plaid trunk carpet for a molded trunk carpet kit from Distinctive Industries.
