Return of the McLaren Mustang.

Just watched this video and noted all the excess capacity. I think the 2015+ Mustang would be the perfect time to bring back the McLaren Mustang, and make it the ultimate track car. I'd bite.

I think they have long since moved away from that market.

They will concentrate on their supercars, so don't expect them to cater to us lowly Mustang owners.

You guys are talking about the McLaren Mustang? As in the car modified by McLaren ASC (as in McLaren American Sunroof Company) - its a totally different company and has nothing to do with the MP4C or P1

The MP4C and P1 are manufactured by a subdivision of McLaren Group, specifically McLaren Automotive neither of which is related to McLaren ASC. Its just dumb coincidence that the two share a name.

Prototype already spotted testing

Yeah, as stated, two very different companies (3 if you include the strollers!)

True, but what about this one?

The McLaren Mustang teamed Ford Design with McLaren Performance of Formula One racing fame. Planned production was just 250 examples. Power was again provided by the turbo-four, but it was newly fortified with a variable boost control having a range of 5 psi (0.3 bar)-11 psi (0.8 bar) vs. the regular engine's fixed 5 psi (0.3 bar). Rated output was 175 horsepower (130 kW) at 10 psi (0.7 bar), a big jump over the 132 horsepower (98 kW) stock engine. A $25,000 price tag and virtual hand construction limited McLaren production to just 10 units (including the prototype).

That's the one I remember. I had forgotten about the other till I was gently reminded. Probably erased it from my memory. Shudder.

As for the proper one, I saw one (or a "tribute") run Mosport one weekend way back when I marshalled. Loved it.

I vaguely remember the car but nothing about it, that's why the McLaren ASC Mustang jumped into my mind.

Man, those performance numbers from the boosted 4, which they state in the article bested the V8 car.

Its to bad they didn't include slalom and skid pad info, that would interesting to compare to the current car as the M81 is fitted with 255/55R15 tires on 15x8 wheels in just under 2600 lbs. of curb weight (my guess is that the current car would also beat the M81 due to the advances in suspension and tire technology despite weighing half a ton more).

So here's three companies called McLaren? And they're all automotive!

1) McLaren ASC ? American Sunroof Company or American Specialty Cars
2) McLaren Performance Technology - Engines
3) McLaren F1 - Automotive

Why was the ASC Mustang called ASC McLaren? It appears ASC is the company and they did other cars not called McLaren.

Those and the Glidden Thunderbird were my go to parts bin for kit bashing models, I can't remember how many Boss 429 powered cars with BBS wheels I put together.
