Performance Package for highway
Performance Package for highway
I plan on ordering up a 2015 Mustang here in early 2015. I am wondering if anyone has ordered the Performance Pkg (PP) and if so, what kind of ride do you get on the highway?? Also what kind of gas mileage?? I want to order the PP but don't think it would be a very good touring/highway car due to it's stiffer springs and 3.73 gears. My driving will be mostly highway & a daily driver. I have no desire to take it on a track BUT I really like the Brenbo (sp?) brakes, strut tower brace and the larger radiator & love the black rims. You get a lot for your $$ with the PP but is it a good choice for a touring car??
Actually, I was pleasantly surprised how comfortable my car drives with PP. It is firm but not harsh at all and the car itself is so quiet when crusing that it is remarkable. My wife and I had a 1 1/2 hour drive home from the dealership the day we picked it up and she even commented how quiet and comfortable it drives. The handling is also lazer sharp. The only issue for some as a daily driver is the tires as discussed aren't great for cold or wet weather but they can be changed out easy enough. For me the upgraded hardware for the price is unbeatable. Gas mileage isn't a huge difference compared to the standard or 3:55 gears. I can easily get 23mpg on the highway crusing and combined around 19 for my commute.

Thanks for the input but....Well, now I'm really confused but will probably end up with the standard 3.31 gear ratio with the 6 speed. I was on another thread and a guy said his 2015 Stang w/ PP @ 70mph in 6th gear was getting around 2600 rpm. He did say it had a strong 2nd gear tho. I also saw another thread where a guy had the 3.31 gears & was getting around 2000 rpm in 6th gear at 70mph. Probably my best choice in that I'll be on the highway a lot, I'll probably take your advice Brigman and go with the 401A option but I still want the 50th appearance pkg, I like the rim option you get with that pkg. Definitely getting the DIB tho. Thanks for the advice. Happy New Year!!!

The 3.73 gears still return decent gas mileage. Keep the speed between 60-70mph on the highway and you should average betweeng 22-24 mpg, move upwards to somewhere betwen 70-90 mph it will drop to 19-22 mpg avg, all dependent on elevation changes and consistency of speed in traffic.
Here's some specs for 6th gear highway speeds with the PP 3.73 vs non-PP GT standard equipped 3:31 gears:
60 mph = 1,875 vs 1,675 rpms
70 mph = 2,200 vs 1,950 rpms
80 mph = 2,500 vs 2,225 rpms
90 mph = 2,825 vs 2,500 rpms
As for the ride, it depends on two things, how choppy the roads are where you drive how old you are. Typically the older and less healthy you are, the less tolerable you become to a more taught suspension. Compared to all the previous generation solid axle Mustang's I've owned, the 2015 suspension laughs at things that would break you back in a 2014 and earlier. I commute approx 70-miles per day, and most of my drive is enjoyable and smooth, while other more bumpy and choppy roads wear on me a little, but when you up the speeds to 85+ mph, the 2015 suspension is a dream compared to the 2014 and earlier potential nightmare.
Worst case scenario, get the PP, and if it rides too rough, order the standard GT springs and dampers from Ford and install. I too wanted all the thing the PP offered, but not so much the more taught suspension, and might swap the springs and dampers for standard GT fare.

I have a 2015 GT w/PP, so let me give you my opinion after 5-days of ownership.

Thanks so much for your input. I am 68 yrs old but am in pretty darn good shape for my age due to my lifestyle I've been living up here in Alaska. Driving is one thing I can do as good as I did when I was 35. The last muscle car I had was a 55 Chevy with a bored 327, 3/4 Crane race cam, 4:11 gears, Muncie 4 speed & sporting around 400-425 HP (maybe more, never dyno'd it) back in 1985. I've been up here in Alaska driving 4WD's, hunting & fishing & fighting crappy weather 7 mo's out of the year since 1985. I'm older now, can't do a lot of the things I used to do outdoors (esp hunt) & am tired of shoveling snow every other day, besides that, there's not too many Docs up here that will take Medicare lol. I really miss my V-8 rumble, manual tranny & St Louis Cardinals but what I REALLY miss the most are dry/ice free streets 98% of the year. The wife & I are moving back to Missouri this summer. I'm ordering a 2015 Premium GT in March so your input was MOST appreciated & was the most detailed I've gotten. Gives me a lot to think about before I order. What I know so far is the 401A shaker option, 6 spd manual & Dark Impact Blue. Thank You Sir, Dennis
I was wrong on the mph, I was using the gear ratios from the automatic by accident, fixed below.
Here's some specs for 6th gear highway speeds with the PP 3.73 vs a non-PP GT with the standard equipped 3:31 gears:
60 mph = 1,775 vs 1,575 rpms
70 mph = 2,075 vs 1,850 rpms
80 mph = 2,375 vs 2,100 rpms
90 mph = 2,650 vs 2,350 rpms

I just got a 2015 GT Premium with the PP and live where some roads are just awful. On the interstate or good highway, the car is about as comfortable as any we own. My wife really likes how comfortable the standard seats are. I honestly think if you want some of the PP features, just go for it and don't worry about it. You will be happy with it.
