I dont know if the 2013 Mustang will be the last time we see a tall deck mod motor in a Mustang, but it seems as if the 5.8 will have a good run based on an article as it indicated Ford wanted to offer something a bit more exclusive than just poting over a 5.0 and stuffing forged guts in it.
God, I have been away too long. Where can I read about this 5.8?

My opinion is NO WAY! Taking that 6 inches wheelbase difference over the previous generation, when people have had 10 years to get used to a larger size, would be a hard sell.

I could be absolutely wrong, but if any dimensions would shrink, it would be near the front. At most, I believe we'd see an inch or two of length reduction. Perhaps there would be a width increase to offset and height reduction.

Looking at recent performance cars, the one example that comes to mind that shrunk in the wheelbase was the Nissan 370Z. However, that car is a 2-seater. The C6 Corvette is another example of a shrinking between generations. However, the wheelbase there increased a little.

I am fairly confident that we will see a reduction in weight. What I am hoping for is a reduction in size as well. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'm hoping for a size reduction. It would also be nice of the hood could slope down lower, for better visibility. I realize that engine size limits just how low you could bring the hood down, but the lower the better.

Size and weight reduction would be appreciated. If the next-gen Mustang will be sold in Europe, the pedestrian crash safety standards may dictate how low that hood line can go. Wonder if Ford would develop a 5.4/5.8 V8 based on the DOHC 5.0 that would be physically smaller than the current 5.8, yet still pack a punch.

When they came out with the new 5.0, I remember reading that the bore cannot be substantially increased. The stroke could be increased, although lengthening the stroke probably means decreasing the redline. I don't see how they could make the external dimensions of an existing engine smaller.

I know it will never happen, but I think it would be cool to have a high-rpm, horizontally-opposed 6 as a Mustang engine. I should think that it would have a significantly lower center of gravity than a V-engine, which ought to improve handling.

That would be nice, the trinity motor has a slightly larger bore compared to the 5.0, but the 5.0 still utilizes better flowing heads plus it has TiVCT which is a nice touch (although the trinity does have its own set of fancy letters; TVS ) plus shedding some weight is always good, even with all aluminum construction. The 2013's GT500 motor's dressed weight is an eye popping 625 pounds ( sigh... which means my car has a jaw dropping almost 730 pound engine)

The 5.0 weighs in at around 440 pounds so I imagine a tall deck version of the 5.0 sporting supercharger gear and cast iron manifolds could probably loop off another 50-75 pounds provided such an engine has the mettle to meet Ford's durability requirements using the basic architecture the 5.0 employs now.

Smile

The picture of the 2013 GT500 engine on the cover of the 5.0 Mustangs mag sure does look nice. The 5.8 with the supercharger has to be the best looking of any current engine. It looks like pure ecstasy. I dont like engines covered with engine covers. This engine just has such a purposefull look to it.

I would guess that the 5.8 is the Mod motors exit bow and that future (NextStang) models will probably use the 5.0 in NA and blown forms. It just seems to go against the grain to keep a Mod motor assembly line going in this day of model and cost rationalization, especially as the 5.0 has a lot of performance potential itself.

Presuming the NextStang trims off maybe 200lbs of fat, sports a somewhat more tailored body and rides and a more nimble and adept IRS suspension, even a 600hp GT500 (and that GT500 nomenclature would make more sense with a 500 centiliter motor) would offer more than abundant scoot and superior overall performance, economy and emissions. Remember, more hp will make a car faster in a straight line, less weight will make a car faster everywhere.

I'd give a deposit right away, this concept represents what i'd want to see in the next generation Mustang. Just awesome....do we have a shot of the rear !

I hate to disagree with the "supplier leaking 2015 information," but the above picture does not look like a design commissioned by Ford. Also, how would a "supplier" know so much about the inner-workings of Ford's product design department? I hate to raise the BS flag, but if it quacks like a duck...

As I read it, the mod motor in 5.8 trim was kept to further differentiate the GT500 from its more run of the mill brethern which from a marketing stand point certainly holds water with me. If I'm going to lay down a 15k premium (assuming the 2013 GT500 is 60k loaded) over a Boss and more so over a GT I certainly wouldn't want a 5.0 stuffed with a forged rotating assembly and topped off with a blower (well unless Ford was willing to roll the Boss and GT back to a 4.7 (289 cid) liter displacement. )

Nice, but too clearly based on the S197 (not that that's a bad thing!)

Very nice...the overall profile design looks like an evolution of the Giugiaro Mustang concept; the rear looks like the Saleen from '10-'12. Speculation fun...

That would have made for a really nice 2013 GT500.
