One Thing It Will Have...For Sure
Back-Up Camera
"To meet the requirements of the proposed rule, ten percent of new vehicles must comply by Sept. 2012, 40 percent by Sept. 2013 and 100 percent by Sept. 2014."

Guess what folks...
Back-up cameras are one of those wonderful safety devices that only works if you look at it.
I wonder...
What percentage of backing accidents involve not looking in the mirrors we have now?
Kinda reminds me of how well seat belts work if you don't wear 'em.

bah! it may be safe and helpful but i dont need no stinkin cam. i just heard about this. they say like 2 kids die every week or somethin like that due to being backed over by a car. i kinda find that a bit hard to believe.

It is a real problem.
I also believe that the number of deaths will not be significantly reduced.
It sound to me like another proposal by a person who can't sleep at night because he didn't look when backing up.

Great, more government involvement. Dumb idea in many cases anyways. There's 3 mirrors on the car, adjust them properly and use them. Now we'll have people looking down at their radio instead of looking in their mirrors. If you're going to have one, I recommend getting one like I put in my wife's Jeep.
In the Jeep, it makes sense since when the 3rd row of seats are up and a car seat's in the middle, the total viewing are out of the back window is about 3 inches near the top. But the one I put in is integrated into the mirror (which I also replaced). At least this way you're looking in the proper place (the mirrors) when backing instead of down at your radio.

Which brings up another point...
If you are old like me and the gov. mandated camera shows up in the mirror...
I will have trouble seeing it through the distance part of my bifocals.
Little stuff like that I need in the bottom where the close vision lens is.

Sounds like somebody in the NHTSA has a friend in video camera manufacturing...

The best way to avoid backup accidents is to avoid backing out of places, instead, back into places when you get there so you pull out forward when you leave.
Why?
When you approach a spot to back in, your mind is already in "driving mode". You get a good look at the spot on the driveby and you're attentive to what you're doing.
But when you leave to go somewhere, you're not as attentive, you mind hasn't switch over to "driving mode" and you're focussing on any number of things instead of where your car is going.
Adjust heat!
Put on seatbelt!
Kids strapped in?
Am I running late?
Turn on the radio!
Not looking forward to the traffic/going to work!
I just got laid yahoo!
Gotta stop and get gas!
etc etc etc
How many people do you hear of backing over kids when they're backing INTO the driveway? Not many. It's always when they leave. Back in when you arrive so you can pull forward to leave. If you did that 90% of these backover accidents wouldn't happen.
I learned this lesson the hard way, when I was 20 I was backing out of a spot, got clipped by some idiot that was racing through the parking lot. Because I was the one backing up, I was the one who suffered the insurance ramifications because I was the one in reverse even though the other guy was flying. If I had been pulling out straight I would have seen him coming and probably would've avoided the accident.

I was looking out the back of my car. Still ran into a cart. If it was a kid, I'd have probably killed it. The cart wasn't in my view. I swear it wasn't there before I started moving. I don't know, but it was really disturbing.
Therefore, I don't have a problem with any additional safety measurements.
I'm curious as to the complaints. Really? You don't want this? Why?
a) drives up the cost?
b) assumes you can't drive or some other ego assaulting flavor of idea?
c) You can't see it anyway? (in which case, you're driving because...?)
d) other?
e) All of the above?
All invalid. I'm good with it. Kinda surprised it took this long to get here.
What would *suck* is that they would mandate that all cars, regardless of when they were made, would have to have them. And at owner cost.
Maybe by 2014 they'll be cheap to get, and decent to install. I'd do it. For sure since I did the cart thing.
/scary.
//then pissed off about it.
///It was a really bad day.

Seriously, I pretty much agree. I like the idea of backing into a space or final parking location so that you can actually see what is in your way and won't have to go out blindly.

Lol, didn't know if anyone would catch that.
I want to get the backup camera in mine, but unfortunately Ford in their wisdom decided to put it in the spoiler AGAIN, so unless I want to go without the hood and side scoops I have to take the pedistal spoiler.
At any rate, I have no aversion to having cameras AS A TOOL, unfortunately we all know there will be people using the camera ONLY when they back up because they can't turn their fat neck on a pivot and look where they're going.

The problem with this is I find most people don't know what thier car does when they back up and turn the wheel. All day every day at work I deal with this issue. Watching somebody try a 20 point turn to get into a spot with 20 feet of room in front of them isn't something to inspire confidence.
