Next Gen V8
Ford Mustang's Engine of the Future
April 1, 2011
Ford released news on it's next generation V8 Mustang today. The Coyote 5.0 will be replaced by the 2.0x2 Ecoboost I-4.
Ford's Twin Ecoboost I-4 engine program manager, Scott Markowski, says the new 2.0 GDI starts with the old 2.0-liter Duratec engine, and "we upgraded everything." Only the bore centers and the 87.5mm bore x 83.1mm stroke remain. The new engine is all-aluminum, with the stainless steel fuel rail on the side of the cylinder head instead of atop it, between intake and exhaust valves. The Engines sit side by side under the hood.

Ford released news on it's next generation V8 Mustang today. The Coyote 5.0 will be replaced by the 2.0x2 Ecoboost I-4.
Ford's Twin Ecoboost I-4 engine program manager, Scott Markowski, says the new 2.0 GDI starts with the old 2.0-liter Duratec engine, and "we upgraded everything." With the side-mounted GDI, the new four has a particularly narrow profile. The new 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo four launching in the 2011Explorer also shares the old Duratec's and the new 2.0 GDI's bore centers, though the EcoBoost's direct injection rails are atop the cylinder head. The EcoBoost's block casting is different than the GDI's, and the crankshaft and other components are of heavier duty, to handle turbo stresses.
The result is 180x2 for a total 360 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 446 foot-pound at 5450 rpm, with a 8000 rpm redline, and fuel shutoff not much beyond that.
EPA fuel mileage is 28/40 mpg for the GT-FE, a special fuelefficiency model with a rear deck spoiler and low rolling resistance tires.
