New EcoBoost Mustang gets beaten by S-197 V6 on drag strip

The latest test for the EcoBoost comes from the guys over at American Muscle who posted a video putting an automatic model of the turbocharged four-banger up against a manual model. They even ran the automatic 2.3 against a 2014 V6 Mustang. While the stick took the win in the EcoBoost vs. EcoBoost showdown, the automatic EcoBoost proved to be no match for the S-197 ... that is, unless you compare its first race's ET with the V6's ET.

Let's not forget that the V6 S197 was AUTO. You can't compare EB Manual vs V6 Auto, that would be
And just for the record, a decent run for a V6 Maual is 13.7. So either way EB loses.

Who was expecting a stock for stock show down to play out differently?
Now tune for tune and part for part will go differently.
I would think it to be better for the Ecoboost motor to have more miles on it to do the test. If the 2.3eb motor is anything like the 2.0eb it need times to loosen up since its incredibility tight from the factory.

The slushbox EcoBoost’s best time was 14.36 @ 97.4 mph. The V6 S-197 turned in a 14.57 @ 97.5, so it’s not an all-out victory for the old S-197.
For comparison’s sake, the manual EcoBoost served up an impressive 13.89 @ 103.0 mph.

I can burnout 1st... can chrip 2,3,4th gear on the highway. Lots of more power in the manual transmission in the V6 over the auto.
Having the 3.31 gears over the stock 2.73 gears in the demo probably helps a lot as well.

With a 'tune' the automatic is a lot better. I can burnout 1st gear and get a nice bark in second gear and 'sometimes' a chirp in third. Just saying......
A tune will fix that...mid 12's with the EB and only a tune and DR's!

The title of this thread is so WRONG ... from the linked article:
"The slushbox EcoBoost’s best time was 14.36 @ 97.4 mph. The V6 S-197 turned in a 14.57 @ 97.5, so it’s not an all-out victory for the old S-197.

So the EcoBoost was quicker in both tests ... how is that "New EcoBoost Mustang gets beaten by S-197 V6 on drag strip" ????

There was no manual V6 vs Manual EB. At least not in this comparo. But some publications out there have a 2013 Manual V6 doing a quarter in 13.7. Almost 0.2s better than the EB car.

Gabe, this test was a AUTO Eco versus AUTO V6. The auto V6 smoked the EB. This was based on AM comparison video they posted.

Now, slushbox means auto, right?
And with the auto Ecoboost doing the 1/4 in 14.36 and the auto V6 doing it in 14.57, how is the Ecoboost slower?
I'll quote it again:

Anyway, here is the video:
I know. Verbiage is confusing. I think the EBs had multiple runs, and the V6 only had one. And in that one run it beat the EB...

Also, Livernois ran 13.89 with a stock auto EB before they threw drag radials and a tune on it for a sweet 12.6 .... something that the V6 will never deliver with such slight mods
So head-to-head the EB lost to the older V6, but the EB had the overall lower time of the night.

It just sucks that you have to void your warranty to unlock it. Most owners don't mod their cars, so a stock V6 will outperform a stock EB. MT ran a stock V6 at 13.7.
You don't necessarily void your warranty with mods or tunes.
