Stop-start technology turns off the engine whenever the vehicle is on and the driver's foot is on the brake.

I smell many fried batteries because of this. What happens when the car gets older? Isn't it hell on a starter to keep starting a car every 5 minutes for the whole time you drive? I'm not a fan.

Supposedly saves 15% of fuel.
But how much of that is the programmed 'run-on' to burn any raw fuel in the exhaust when you let off the accelerator - just to beat the EPA sniffer/rules?? Like the 'air pump' - didn't actually reduce any pollution from the cylinder - just diluted it so by the end of the tailpipe the sniffer said 'good'. What a joke!!
How about when I let off the accelerator the throttle actually CLOSES immediately!! grrr....

as far as a couple posts up about using compression/popping it off to restart...well, sorry I dont think thats possible...compression bleeds down pretty quick, and one hit would not start a car to well...plus it would require gas already in there(emissions)...the fuel would be killed during braking to clear the cylinders before it stopped...at least thats my take on it.
the way like ezgo yamaha golf carts run they are a motor/generator/2 cycle (or reversible 4 stroke) with bidirectional spark...when you stop, step back on the gas a switch just turns the motor/generator in 'motor' mode whichever way the engine needs to run, as it takes over the thing goes back to generator mode to recharge it...I dont think a standard starter would be used, most likely a front half of a hybrid tranny...GMs 'modeII' hybrid tranny could do it if the torque converter has a lockup capable of driving the engine to start it...

If it was completely transparent in operation and could be turned off, then sure, why not.
People pinch pennies to put 87 octane swill in their 5.0s at the cost of some 10hp and whatever torque, so why not this and reap a substantial 15% bump in mileage (primarily stop and go obviously) with no necessary decrease in actual performance.
That 15% CAFE rating cushion would also better allow higher performance tuning rather than resorting to, say, fuel-sipper rear end ratios or engine de-tuning and the like.

No drive-throughs at all
Personally, I think they should make drive-throughs illegal.
This country could save lots of barrels of oil just by that.

Yes, I agree totally. But I'm not about to tell all those mommies to not pick up their kids and why aren't they taking the bus? Around here, those are the every week day long lines. It's stupid, roll down the frekkin window and turn off the engine.

I read a bit more on the topic, and the way it works for the stick shift cars is that as soon as the clutch is depressed, the engine shuts off.
Sounds like an absolutely terrible idea to me, how will anyone ever get a smooth shift that way?
Agreed. If it's defeatable with a switch on the dash or something we're all good.
From what I read, the start-stop cars have the alternator and starter or alternator/battery as one piece, and it's beefed up big time. But I still think this is a huge blow to reliability in the long run
