Rob ! That really sucks that your dealer would only offer 9k for your 2012 Focus after you paid 23k for it 9 months ago ? I mean don't get me wrong as I totally understand how cars depreciate in value, but for a car like the Focus to depreciate by 14k in just 9 months is just totally unacceptable IMHO

It was because of how much trouble they were having with the dual clutch. The Toyota dealer here wouldn't even agree to take it on trade. That's how bad the dual clutch was at that time. I don't know if they have sense fixed the dual clutch issues in the Focus / Fiesta but I can tell you I won't buy another one.

Simon ! I'll just add by saying this.. If your expecting to find a car that doesn't depreciate in value ? Then you need to invest in the classic car market such as Barrett-Jackson and Mecum.. There you'll find all kinds of Mustangs, muscle cars which are considered as investments.. The only problem is this, unless your financially stable and have enough disposable income to buy one ? you're pretty much going to be in the same boat as most of us here are in..

Therefore if your going to buy a Mustang whether it's slightly used or new ? Do it because you know your going to really love and enjoy the car for many great years to come rather than worry about it's depreciation value

Heck ! I wouldn't buy another one either after what you went through.. And I really hope Ford does fix the dual clutch issues soon, especially if and when Ford decides to begin offering them in the Mustang

I don't think Ford is going to expand the use of the dual clutch to other products personally. I think it's been such a problem for them that they just won't.

I do, however, think we might see 7 or 8 speed transmissions. What I am most interested to see is the twin turbo V6. You know it's coming.

Unless Ford perfects DCT like the Germans in which I highly doubt will happen any time soon or even at all lol. I don't see it happening either..

I do however agree that we will see either a 7 or 8 speed auto coming sooner than you think and if IIRC, Ford and GM are supposedly exploring the possibility of collaborating with one another in developing a 10 speed auto..

Just don't know exactly if or when it's actually going to be confirmed at this point though

It always seems to me that used cars hold value and are expensive when you are looking to buy them but are terrible at holding value when you want to sell or especially trade in.

I may be able to provide evidence soon. I may be selling my Stang soon and so far it only has 800 miles. I fully expect to see at least 5k drop just to move it.

Well I'm currently a full time student so my money is important to me(still have enough to spend on car) but I know in the future I will regret buying it and seeing how much i've lost with depreciation. On the other hand, used 2013/2014 models with some options are extremely expensive and I may as well spend another 2 or 3K and get the 2015 model. Will be waiting for your evidence MuddyLX !

I couldn't agree more, so you might as well just spend the additional 2-3k more and get the car that you really want and know your going to fully enjoy for hopefully quite a few years at the very least

Yes, but got the itch to get a 911 and don't see a reason to have both. Probably should have waited before buying this one. Don't get me wrong, I love this GT. I've owned Mustangs for decades.

I've been wanting a 911 for years and figure why not do it now, so I'm starting to watch for a good used 997.2. Who knows, may keep the GT but don't have garage space for two toys.

I bought my 12' for 42k out the door and 2 years 38k miles later dealers have offered me only 20k on trade in.
Cars have a way of blowing thru money pretty good and quick

I didn't buy my car worrying about future value, I bought it to drive and enjoy.

I'd really hate to see you get rid of your 2015 GT, as you've been such a loyal Mustang owner for so many years and I know how excited you were waiting for your 2015 to arrive as well..

In the meantime, hopefully you'll be able to find a way to keep your GT, but if not ? Then I can certainly understand why, as I'm also in the same boat as your in because like yourself, I don't have enough garage space for two toys either..

And I definitely can't blame you for wanting a 911, as far as I'm concerned

As I don't care what kind of new car you happen to buy, they all depreciate the moment you drive them off the lot..

Therefore buy your car to drive and enjoy, otherwise don't even waste your time and hard earned money to begin with

Simon, the best resale value vehicle in the country is the Toyota Tacoma and even then it's value drops to 74% of retail after 3 years and 60% of retail after 5 years. That's retail mind you so you won't get that on a trade in, only if you private sell the vehicle yourself. Now given that the average price of a Tacoma is right about 30 grand once you factor in interest and tags that means after three years the truck would sell for $22,200 retail. That means if you're lucky you might get 19K for it on a trade in.

There is no vehicle out there that you're going to make scads of money on unless you open your own garage and start restoring old muscle cars. Even buying used cars brings with it the fact that you're going to pay more for whatever vehicle you buy than the vehicle is worth. My advice is buy the vehicle you really like and keep it for years so that you're well past having it paid off by the time you sell or trade it.
