Ford premature with 2015 release?
Unfortunately this is becoming the norm in the car industry. It's kind of like the Christmas shopping season coming earlier every year.
Once upon a time, you would hear about a new year model just before its November/December release to the showrooms.
Fast forward to today and BMW (the manufacturer who I work for) has already given us our first production numbers for a few of the redesigns and new models for 2015. (the I3, I8, and M series). These will all hit showrooms in late April /May as 2015 models.

We're in the market for a small P/U (Frontier-Tacoma) (No Ranger for USA) Chevy/Gmc have 'Auto Showed' the upcoming Colorado/Canyon all over the place, just like Ford with the Mustang, available Fall 2014.
They (Manufacture's) are smart, we're waiting until the 'Colorado/Canyon' actually hit's the pavement before deciding what brand we get. Same scenario with the Mustang, Instead of purchasing something now, I'm waiting to see the final product...
They have succeeded, in preventing a sale to the competition, for now and possibly, stealing it away by teasing the public with a look at the future.
You mentioned M in your post, would that be, M2?

Way to early, which seems to be the way they market things these days. Not as bad as the Acura NSX....Thats been out 2 years and still no production car in site. Hopefully they can get there act together and produce a quality product as Fords track record as of late has not been good.
Perhaps it was orchestrated this way to test the waters and see how the masses warm up to the new design. Gives them time to back pedal and refine if really necessary. Those who don't warm up to it will be buying remaining '14's which have run their course in production numbers i've heard. There isn't a large number of 14's sitting unsold perhaps.
Just my hunches.

To the original poster, to a certain extent, this is the way the car business works. As another poster mentioned, the car show circuit runs from January->April essentially. If you don't get the car out there for that circuit, you run the risk of a release that doesn't have the hype of people battling for the cars.
That being said, I've always been a bit confused as to why they don't open up the order banks earlier. If the car is slotted to be on the roads for summer 2014, why not let people walk into their local dealership after seeing the car at the auto show, and put a deposit down right away. If anything, that might help stimulate 2014 sales... as people are going to go in realizing that they're waiting close to 9 months (and then getting a summer vehicle in the fall), so a 2014 sitting on a dealer lot may be all that more attractive.
