I thought asbestos was generally harmless when left alone but became dangerous when torn down because of particles in the air.

Allegedly. But that doesn't mean leaving it there is good either as any movement could release dust particles. Possibly from machinery causing vibration, pallets being dropped, forklifts bumping something, etc.
Many older schools have done remediation to avoid any liability, and no doubt many companies are doing the same with older buildings. Either way its expensive to remove or expose the company to future liability from lung cancer patients...

Harmless until someone runs into something with a fork truck and releases a ton of it, or something fails unexpectedly and now there's a ton of asbestos in the air in a factory full of employees.

Probably better and safer to take it all down in a controlled manner.

As I recall, this was said to be the case when I toured there just before the shutdown. They permitted us to take photos at the plant. I'll have to see if I can find any.

I was lucky enough to walk mine down the line last October. It was a great experience...one of the perks of working in the industry.

I'll never forget it!

It would be awesome to do that. I spent over 14 years rebuilding my '66 in the garage. I'd love to watch my new one be built in that many hours or less. BTW, how long does it take from the front of the line to the end?

Have a good watch.
Not sure if it says exact time, but 10hrs in the paint section.
I think it's between 20-24hours start to finish, or something like that. Could be wrong.

That was a really good video. Makes me want a GT500 now.
