I forget exactly when, but for a while, F1 was doing crazy turboed fours, some of them getting upwards of 1,500hp before they went to naturally aspirated motors to try to tone things down a bit.

I'm a V8 guy, all I've ever owned are GT's. But, I have always liked the SVO, and there is a nice(not perfect) SVO running around town. A young guy is driving it.
I am most likely repeating myself, but I hope Ford makes a SVO Type Mustang in the future!

Iron heads? I have to assume iron block as the iron heads on aluminum block is what killed the Vega engine. So that is not lighter than an all aluminum V8.
Turbos are generally lighter that positive displacement blowers and more efficient in that they use less gas but not as responsive on the street.
Compound charging either with two turbos or a turbo and a positive displacement blower could be made to work great. Alfa had compound blowers in their pre and post WWII GP cars so the technology is not new but certainly improved.
