Why not a Boss 351 ?

Why not a Boss 351 ?
With the rumors hitting the internet today of the 2013 Shelby GT500 sporting a 5.8 liter monster, I wonder if the SVT team could whip up a naturally aspirated Boss 351.
Just a thought…

It's crossed my mind......but with the 302, Ford were keen to keep the high-revving characteristics of the original Boss engine. Not sure a supercharger is in keeping with the 351 Boss.
That's not to say I wouldn't prefer it to be called that over the Shelby GT500 moniker, because I would

that 5.8L in the GT500 (or going to be anyways) isnt a Coyote. its the 5.4L bored out to 5.8L. some aftermarket tuner company bored out a 5.0L Coyote block to 5.8L so if they can do it maybe Ford can too but who knows what to expect.....

I'm not that concerned with weight if that’s what you mean, for example the 2011 GT500 is 3801 lbs while the 2012 Boss is 3621 lbs.
So the GT500 is only 180 lbs more than a Boss 302, with a blower and loaded with some extras that the boss does not have.
So a Boss 351 if Ford takes the same approach of keeping the weight down, well it could be pretty good I think.
I would be more concerned with weight distribution, 57/43 on the GT500 versus the 55/45 of the Boss, but I’m confident the folks at SVT could clean that up as well.
Bottom line I guess is I’m a dreamer and would just love to see what Ford could churn out before they go to a smaller car where the 5.4 probably will not fit and is naturally aspirated.

I think its not simply the quantity of weight, 180lbs to take your figure, the GT500 lugs over the Boss but rather, where the bulk of that weight resides, over the already burdened front axle where it is most deleterious.
A good example of how this weight proportioning can negatively affect handling and dynamics, note how much better the handling of the AL block 2011 GT500 is over the heavier iron blocked early GT500s. Sure, some of that was improved suspension tuning, but a lot was simply getting a lot of lard out of the nose.

If Ford does build a 5.8 liter Shelby GT500, I could see them build a 351 Boss after a two year model run of the Boss 302.Just like 1971 whwn they built a 351 Boss for only one year.

With the 2014 being an all new, smaller, globally sourced and designed chassis, I think it is unlikely the 5.4/rumored bored 5.4 will fit, so whatever happens will have to happen in 2013 and only for one year.

Okay so new body style in 15', not 14'. Word from an insider I spoke with is the Boss 351 was on the table but ultimately scraped because it does not have the same “heritage" as the 302.
Also a re-designed rear for 13' and 14' MY, and a Mach 1 for 14' MY to end the special edition Mustangs with the current body style.
I dare not say what he hinted at for the 15' because he would kill me other than to say with an eco-boost 4 in the 15' MY, it sure leaves them a lot of room in the cafe goals to build something really special...

Great stuff in the prior post. If they do a Mach 1 it will be for 2 years. They won't do a SE for just one. The Mach 1 would then have the 5.8 from the new GT500 minus the supercharger.
