Possible Cobra return?
Now to return to the topic: This is 2010--and rapidly closing on 2011--and I just can't see the market being right for a new Cobra to fill up the garages of bald old rich men, a few NBA stars, an assortment or rock musicians, a regiment of sheiks, an actor or two, and a smattering of drug lords. A handful of racing crews might get one or two each, if they're lucky.
But you ain't gonna get even one and I ain't gonna get one either because a truly competitive machine would be stickered up in the Koenigsegg/Bugatti ionosphere where you 'n' me ain't ever been. Getting involved in such a project ain't within Carroll Shelby's means or within SVT's means. Added to that is a crappy economy with two million maybe-builds-two-to-ten-cars-per-month boutique exotic car builders cranking out a handful of cars each year and you have a market that's flooded with supercars in a market where only those I mentioned above can afford them.
I don't like the way it is, but it is still the way it is...

Well said, #2098! 'Ain't none of us lived half the life Ol' Shel lives even when he's asleep. And he's eighty-somethin'!

Right now, it sure seems like we're not going to lose any major arms of Mustang in the coming years. I think they can make some business case for them, as long as they keep them somewhat limited. The limiting of them to 5500 units this year may have just been to keep values high, which I see no problem in.
As for what is coming soon, I don't doubt the coiled snake is here to stay. I don't see the pricing trumping a base model Corvette at much, if at all, based on where they seem to be fitting the car in.
Keep in mind, right now we're in the 3rd year of the current body, and that might lend itself to a little nip/tuck here in '13 MY. Ford made it clear not too long ago that they weren't going to let their products get too stale, and that 3-year refreshes would become commonplace. Considering the Edge, Fusion, Taurus (if you can count that), and others have had a shelf life of only three years, I'm guessing they'll buff up the styling a bit next year.
So, as I've said before, we still have a "Cobra" but with a few extra words in the title. Just give it time and let things play out in the next 12 months.
Overboost: Sorry for the omission in the posting you quoted. All the Cobra talk was in response to an earlier jsaylor posting that contained this sentence:
"My personal preference, in a purely dream world of course, would be to see Shelby American morph back into the American Ferrari-fighter it once was and that would include Shelby American doing all of the GT350 and GT500 models themselves."
My comments refer to the sportscar Cobras, of course, and not to various Mustangs that bore Cobra monikers.
Time-out is a huge nuisance, and the haste to get 'er done before time-out strikes means some stuff gets left out, inadvertantly as well as intentionally. Sorry.

man, this would be awesome. There was a vid going around of a mag also thinking that there could be an ecoboost 5.0, hell didnt ford say it themselves that they'll make a TT5.0 similar to the 3.5 ecoboost? all rumors, but it would be awesome. I'd probably pick up a slightly used one if it happened
TT 5.0s are most probably coming but the history of the cobra has been sc. The whine of a blower just goes along with cobra image. I wouldn't doubt that Ford will do a TT5.0 but it will not be for a cobra.
Not all Cobras had 'em - the '94-'95 5.0Ls, and the '96-'98s/'99s 4.6Ls were all naturally aspirated.
And 93, and 00 R, and 01, and original GT350/GT500s, and the AC Cobras, etc. Okay, there were a few factory Paxton SC'd GT350s, but only recently has the SC become synonymous with the Cobra name. I can see Ford TT'ing the next SVT car to keep it a unique offering when compared to the FRPP Whipple Coyote...

Time for a bump.
This is a great thread and it's good to see such debate and differing opinions without it degenerating into an internet catfight
The fact that 2013 is the 20th anniversary of the SVT Mustang had completely passed me by. What better time to give us something new and the options already mentioned in this thread all appeal in one form or another:
Twin Turbo Coyote 5.0 (I love it for the name alone
)
Supercharged Coyote 5.0 (the GT350 mill looks something special)
N/A 5.4 with alloy block (that was an option I'd never considered, but I like it!)
With a potential bodywork/facia nip n tuck for MY2013 the next 6-12 months are gonna be exciting

How bout take the mill from the gt350, take off some of that horrendus body work (front/rear fascia, etc..) couple lighter materials and the suspension of a BOSS 302. Oh and standard brembo brakes. Making around 550-580 would be nice
Anyone feel like drawin up their own concept of such a car?

In Canada, SVT dealerships still exist.
They can sell the GT500, Raptor...
and seems like Ford is using it for distribution of a non-svt vehicle .. which I find bogus.
Unlike in the US, where all dealerships now can order/recieve these vehicles.
and sometimes * based on lottery*
