navigation going wonky
Need Ford Tech help: navigation going wonky
The arrow on the map on the nav has been acting up on me.
It will sometimes spin around in circles in the direction of travel, even though the car is going straight. Or it will show my car going backwards down a road. Or it just has problems figuring out what road I am on. Or sometimes it is doing all of the above.
Everything else is fine on the nav.
Suggestions?
Cheers

I can't seem to find anything in the menus, however. Maybe someone knows how to recalibrate? Who's the Ford tech that is on these forums?
Cheers
Brittany here! It's great to meet you. The compass reading may be affected when you drive near large buildings, bridges, power lines, and powerful broadcast antenna. Magnetic or metallic objects placed in, on or near the vehicle may also affect compass accuracy.
I suggest trying a manual calibration; you can find instructions on pages 72-73 of your owner's manual.
Let me know how it goes! I'll be here to answer any other questions that arise.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for keeping me updated, jim010. You mentioned bringing it in for a hood replacement a few weeks ago; did you mention this concern to them by chance? Because the calibration didn't work, I suggest having them take a look and diagnose this concern.
Hope to hear from you soon.

I understand, jim010. I'd like to look into some available options. In order to do so, I'll need your full name, VIN, dealer information, updated odometer reading, and best daytime contact number.
Once I receive this information via private message, I'll hit the books.

I got this from my Ford tech:
Sorry for the delay getting back to you; as usual, I’m just managing to keep my nose above the water line. I’m not quite sure what the issue with your Nav might be. There are 2 separate systems involved. The first is the compass. In the original installation, the compass sensor is part of the rear-view mirror. The calibration described in the forum is for this system only. The Nav system can’t give you the direction you’re pointed unless you are moving because it has to calculate the difference between 2 or more GPS fixes. I checked for TSBs and found nothing applicable. The antenna for the system is the same one as for satellite radio. There is a splitter module inline between the cable coming from the GPS/Satellite antenna that plugs into 2 separate connectors on the back of the Nav head unit (a pink one and a yellow one). See the attached diagram. I have had issues with all 3 components (antenna, cable and splitter module) on different vehicles that cause issues like you’re describing. The problem is that the only way to diagnose this issue is swapping parts. I have some antennas and cables that I have used for testing (didn’t fix the problem on particular vehicles), but I think they are all truck parts and the connector genders may be wrong. I could try re-flashing the Nav unit, but it’s not likely that the software is at issue after 2 years of normal operation.
