Hood paint flaking on 12 GT

So I have a 2012 GT Brembo convertible. Months ago, I noticed that the paint was bubbling around the rim of my hood. A little googling showed me that this is a fairly common issue. I mentioned it to Ford when it was still within the 36,000 area, and they said it had to be "perforated." A few weeks ago it started flaking on the underside. Today I went to the dealership for my oil change, and asked them if there was any way they'd cover it, considering that the car is two years old. They told me no, as the car would have to have under 36,000 miles on it (which it did when I first mentioned the problem). The car has 51k miles on it (it's a daily driver -- 35,000 miles a year). The paint is now flaking off and the bubbling is accelerating. Has anybody else gotten this problem resolved, or did you have to have it painted? And if you did, how much did it run you to get the hood painted? I can't believe that I am going to have to shell out probably a grand for paint that's flaking off a car that MSRPs in the mid $40k's.

Pictures of the bubbling attached (can't wash the car for fear of losing even more paint or washing everything but the hood, which I'm not gonna do).

Edit: Image and spelling issues

I had the same issue and it was still within warranty period. It was repainted by the dealer. While it looks good now, I don't trust that it will not come back. If it does, I am just going to get an aftermarket hood. If I was in your position, and had to pay out of pocket, I would just get an aftermarket hood and be done with it. You figure it will probably cost at least 500 bucks to get it repainted with no guarantees that the problem is solved.

Do you know if there is anywhere where I can get the hood pre-painted like American Muscle does with spoilers and such? I don't see any on AM. But yeah, I agree about the aftermarket hood if they end up not paying for it. What a load of crap though.

I think if you go directly to the Cervinis website they have them prepainted if you want. You would probably get a better match if you took it to a reputable body shop though. Your color may require blending into the fenders to match properly.

Yikes! It's really unfortunate the dealer wouldn't cover the cost. Especially with it bubbling so badly while you were under warranty. If they gave me the same answer you did while I was under warranty, I'd probably give it a good scratch of the finger nail and come back haha.

At the moment we don't offer pre-painted hoods unfortunately. It's an idea that has been tossed around more than a few times. The risk of the large hood's paint getting damaged during shipment is just too risky honestly.

Hope you're able to find an aftermarket hood you prefer though!

I have this issue as well. Just waiting on the dealer to hear what they say. My waranty runs out in a couple of weeks.

I'm pretty sure they will say no and I will have to fight it.

I can't believe they didn't cover that. I'd get in touch with Deysha here on the forum.

Mine has some tiny bubbling showing up on the underside..

This is really sad but every time I park the car somewhere safe, I leave the hood open to let the heat demons out without unnecessarily heat soking the aluminum hood.

Anyone want to buy a 2015 F-150?

Jim it shouldn't be a fight as long as the dealer cooperates. I went to one dealer who refused to follow the warranty process and submit the necessary pictures. I found another dealer who took the pics, and had a decision the same day and it was covered.

Yep, mine refused to. I am definitely out of warranty now, but A. I pointed this out to them before 36,000 miles came and they ignored it and didn't even put it on the writeup/invoice (and it slipped my mind as I walked out), and B. the car is a 2012. I can't believe that I have this sort of paint nonsense with a two year old car. My beater 95 Saturn's paint was better than my Mustang's paint, and I got that up to 293k miles.

Shane, the 'perforation' required is the metal, not the paint... look in the 05-09 hood paint ugh thread- I put pics in of brand new 2014 mustangs fusions and others with bubbled up/damaged paint at the 2014 international auto show in cleveland. ford is doing a utterly pathetic job on these aluminum hoods- anyone who thinks their mustang dont have the issue I'd lay odds at 99% they havent inspected the edge of the hem crimp on the underside of the hood- this always starts there, migrates between the layers where it basically can never be removed (sealed/halted at best) and most folks wont see it until the top surface starts to strawberry. Love the Mustang, hate Ford's ignoring of this now decade old issue. dollars to donuts, the new 15 will have it too...the S197 hood changed several times over the years, they almost all have it, just a lot of them dont creep to the top where folks notice it.
my wifes 07 had the tiny bubbles (like my undriven 4 mile stored 09) until recently- I keep a eye every couple months, around Christmas it was stable, but a couple weeks ago, its ballooning up like my 06 did (all the cars hibernate indoors over the winter- her 07 started blossoming just sitting there over the winter). I kept my 06 waxed underhood too, the tiny blisters along the very edge of the underside crimp went from the rough edge no bigger than a thread of bubbles along the edge to a 2"x 24" sheet of bubbles underneath in 2 months time.
If Ford screws that new F150 up like every other aluminum crimped panel theyve done, it could be the end of them

This is my first and probably my last Ford. Too much drama in the first 50k miles for my taste, and no cooperation on the dealer's part. Can't believe that I'm not enjoying a shiny muscle car as the weather starts to get warmer.

every brand has their issues...try not to let one cosmetic quality defect sour you- but write ford, send pics, ask friends to do the same... its obvious to me now Ford is just hoping the warranty goes away- we need to demand better, other cars on the roads have aluminum hoods, no blow away paint jobs...

overall is still a great car- just sucks this aluminum painting issue still hasnt been corrected after all these years, they gotta know its a problem- yet no corrections to a obviously flawed process

we wound up with three of them, plus a old 69 ive had forever- the 69 is my all time favorite body styling wise, but I'd be first to admit its not much of a car underneath... a falcon that gained half a ton.

I put a fang/aeroform 'glass hood on my 06 when it blossomed/blistered, love the look of the shaker with the center spear... woulda been nice to upgrade as a choice though instead of necessity due to bad factory paint. eventually maybe all three will have the same aeroform hoods too- they are heavy, but sure look good to me

I agree; it could be a fatal error. Just hope the deciders had good counsel.

Was this resolved for you, jim010?
