Help indentifying this sound upon acceleration? (Videos included)

Hey all,

For those of you technical minded, I'm desperate for your help. I have taken the car into ford and always get the response "unable to replicate" upon return. My car makes what sounds like an electric motor sound that happens randomly upon acceleration. It doesn't always happen but at the most random times. Sounds like it comes from under the centre console somewhere but it's difficult to pin point. Anyone recognise this sound? It almost sounds like a bee.

Thank you all!
I genuinely love this forum.

Tim

It's really difficult to record using my phone. It is audible in the video. Sounds like a high pitched noise. Really difficult to explain, it sounds like a bee and comes from under the shifter within the car. At least that's what it sounds like!

I can hear it. But I have no idea what it could be. It almost sounds like a gear in your transmission is whining?

Thanks for getting back to me!
It does sound like some kind of whine. Only happens in the lower gear ratio (at least that's where I hear it) and upon acceleration, typically light acceleration. Perhaps it's a lower gear.

I started noticing it after hitting a pot hole quite hard a few months back but ford have done an inspection on the car and said they can't find any mechanical damage. So not sure if it's related or of its a coincidence!

Sounds like the driveshaft is rubbing on something. Or possibly a bushing/rubber isolator is squeaking on you.

Unless it's an every time thing.. you'll have to live with it, or get under the car yourself and see.

Thinking back on my '86 SVO, I'd get a scraping/screeching sound on acceleration... and it was the driveshaft getting torqued into the cat shield. Ford had put a shield on the cat, and the cat was directly under the yoke for the driveshaft/transmission mount, so it'd get torqued up and start to rub the shield. Took a while to figure it out.

Not real sure what happened, but I did the right thing, and shoved a large prybar in there and bent the shield a little... problem solved. Perhaps something esoteric as this is your problem.

Houtex,
Thank you for your informative response. I really appreciate it. I need to go back to ford this week so will ask them to take a look. They've just installed a new drive shaft so would have thought they'd notice if it was this. I notice it came on shortly after hitting the ditch/pot hole at speed so perhaps something shifted and now is rubbing like you said. Though it is strange that it's intermittent!

Thanks so much again!
