Codes, Coils ... Misfire, engine computer?
Had a misfire on cylinder 1, so showed the Autozone scanner ...
I changed the plugs (Motorcraft), and also the injectors (Motorcraft)
while the intake was off.
All the coils and connecters look good/clean/flexible
and almost new.
300 miles later (two days) its back. The blinky engine light,
and rough running for 1-2 minutes. Then it goes away, both
the blinky (or any) engine light, and the rough running ... back
to normal.
It occurs after warmed up, and during a long period of
2K plus rpm, like accelerating up a long on-ramp.
I figure ... the coil, I should have swapped all 6, just side to side,
but failed to remember that part of the earlier plug change plan.
COILs ...
From minimal net surfing, Motorcraft is the most recommended brand .. but also the most
expensive ... Just wondering if there is a good 2nd choice, that might be a little
more economical. What are the chances if one is really dead, another one or two
is not far behind? Is it ok to change just one? (6 of them could add up, $70
ea would be $420 (hey it is 4/20 today too!), plus shipping. The budget ones
at the same online location are $25 each. Putting this in, and still having the issue,
the then dealer trip might require these be removed?
COMPUTER ...
This might be next my limited shade-tree brain thinks
... and it would be a little more $$. Would need a dealer, or a place
that could put in the right V6 (performance package) programming. That is getting
into more bux ... the internet pricing is around $400, plus ... not sure what it would
cost to put in a tune, or ...?
Yeesh! Just *4* months out of warranty.
Is there a way to read the codes without a tool? Back in the day, my brand
mopar/mercedes/fiat I could key it 5 times, and it would blink the code (that
was a model 2001 roll-up windows model). Or, I can just go get a scan tool
of some sort (smartphone!)
Thanks! (sorry to rant).

I can't help with coils, but for the computer(PCM) if you end up needing one once it is ordered as a blank from ford or used. The dealer should be able to store the as-built data off of your current pcm for the v6 pp and upload it back into the new one using Programable Module Installation. It should not be more than a hour worth of work. The only good way of pulling the codes/DTC is to use ford IDS I'm afraid. There are lots of Chinese knock offs available. If you are comfortable doing that kind of stuff you could potentially save a few bucks by doing your own scan and replace... again if it is a PCM problem.

Nope ... dealer service did some investigation, try 1, 3 cyl misfiring on their
computer, but no fault light, and the did not feel it. Did the re-learn (a re-learn,
did not take any notes ..), then it is reading 1 &6.
No troubles on the way home ... will set up an appointment for next week.

Following up ... I did take it to the dealer service shop in
Sterling VA. They cleared, did re-learns etc.
It is gone away ... have put almost 400 miles on, and no issue yet!
Is odd, as they said they were still getting mis-fires, random, but nothing
that I can feel, or see with MPG.
(side note ... thought there was something odd about the new clutch, and I
figured it out while trying to provoke the misfire ... it STICKS TO THE FLOOR
on a spirited shift. Yeesh.)
