2012 Mustang GT 5.0 lifter noise

Took it to dealer, sounds like lifter is collapsed, makes ticking noise, today they called Ford and noise was gone so they said have me drive it and bring back if it happens again. They brought car up to me and it started again now have to leave and wait for Ford to decide what to do. Only has 800 miles and have not had rpms over 4000. Service guy said they should know something from ford on Monday about what to do. Anyone else have this happen, I am going on 2000 mile trip in 10 days don't want to break down. Service guy also said mechanic thought it was not running right as well.

Sorry to hear it sounds like you have a bad motor...but it also sounds like Ford is taking care of it. I wouldn't take it on a 2,000 mile trip - get a rental or postpone the trip. Hope it works out.

Ticking noise? Many many many 5.0s have the infamous ticking,...I'm lucky so far.

Yep, mine has the ticking noise sometimes too. I read there's a TSB about replacing some components in the timing chain drive that's supposed to fix it. I'm gonna mention it next time the car is at the dealer for an oil change.

What does your 2013 tick sound like? I hear something from my passenger side, almost sounds like a squeaky belt. I've always heard it though, and it sounds normal to me outside of the car. It only sounds abnormal when I'm in between two concrete walls and the sound bounces off of the walls.

Mine does not sound like a belt squeaking at all. Its a definite ticking sound that is very loud on the passenger side of the car. I am taking the car in Monday and will have them ensure its not possibly an exhaust leak from changing to the Boss 302 exhaust.

Describe the tick. I wonder if we're talking about the same noise. Mine is passenger side too.

Is the tick random, or is the space between each tick pretty consistent? I might take mine in to have it looked at. Let me know what they tell you!

My tick is pretty consistent but it doesn't happen until the car warms up

Guys, give it time. Mine did it from the start and just like Ford said, it went away on its own under 10,000 miles. As I approached 7K the tick was less and less and at about 9K it was gone. 9600 miles and no ticking AT ALL!

Hi guys,

I recommend you make an appointment with your dealers as soon as possible for diagnosis. Then, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can get this escalated to the Customer Service Manager for your area.

I used to have a random ticking between 1500 and 2000 rpm until I switched to full synthetic. Ever since then its faded to nothing. Never originally was much of a bother though.

There's people all over these boards with random ticking in the exact same rpm band with all sorts of mileage on their cars. The same conclusion is that it's just noise. Some have taken it so far as to get the engine replaced all over a simple noise only to have it come back with the next oil change. I'd say just don't worry about it and drive the car.
