STARTED MY IPAD MINI INSTALL PROJECT
you know theres a sony radio that works with the ipad? as in you can use the ipad to control the sony radio etc...
so if i were doing what you were doing, id install the sony radio behind the ipad to where when the ipad mounts flush to the plate, once you remove the plate it exposes the sony radio.
then have the ac controls below all that.

Paint: SEM has an exterior charcoal metallic trim paint that is spot on for our face plate.
As I described, I wanted to retain the factory climate controls. Unfortunately, they are connected to the factory audio in one unit. So, I got a face plate and the audio/climate controls on ebay for $34. I kept my factory stuff just in case I need to return it to stock. Since I mounted the IPad in front of the audio controls, I removed all the buttons and ground it all down flat. I did not distrub the circiut board Also, I cut the face plate up and glued parts of it to the back of my face plate so it would attach to the dash like the factory one.
The inside of the IPad mount: I haven't decided what to do there. I think I should have just painted it. Thought I'd pollish it but its a pain. Any ideas? I can't add anyting like felt because its already tight so it won't rattle.

The ipad mini holder that I have, they do some kind of spray on flock. It adds no thickness to speak of so even with a tight fit, it should still work. It would look factory, hide any imperfections, plus protect the back of your ipad too.
I would look for something on this site:

You mentioned that the climate controls are integrated into the stereo controls and can't be seperated. One thing I have noticed looking at ebay listings is that the Ford F150 climate controls look very similar to the ones in the Mustang and they are seperate from the stereo controls. They appear to be in the same layout with the buttons in the same locations. So maybe it would fit in the Mustangs stereo bezel with little or no modifications.

Now I know that the connections on the back are different but I have also noticed that the connection on the F150 climate controls looks like the connection on the Mustang Climate Control Module. This makes me wonder if that connection were plugged directly into the F150 controls, would it work? I don't know but if I could find a set of F150 controls for less then maybe $50, I think I would be tempted to try it.

If it worked, we could have factory controls on the bottom of the panel and then be able to cut out what we needed to above it to fit any size head unit we wanted to. Of course, people who are talented with tools and materials can build their own.
